I recently took some #ContinuingEducation on one of my favorite #certs, my Kansas City Barbeque Society #CBJ (#CertifiedBBQJudge) by completing the Judges Certification Update Program!! In addition to judging BBQ I’m also on a professional competition BBQ team, Smokin Boxers’ BBQ, with my dad. Throughout the BBQ season, we can be found in random parking lots around the region competing with some of the best BBQ teams I know. There’s something special about the sweet smell of burning wood just before the crack of dawn, before the sun rises and chases away the crisp of night. It's not all about burning wood though, as much as my neighbor would argue as he complains about the wafting smoke coming from my backyard most weekends. BBQ has taught me many things that I apply to my professional career. #Patience. BBQ is done when BBQ is done, there’s no rushing a great brisket or rack of ribs. Patience also plays a key part in my professional career. Whether it’s waiting for a signature, an answer from a product team, a decision from leadership, or just a response from a client; some things are out of our control and we just have to wait. #Consistency. I strive to make everything I cook consistent. I want every rib to have that perfect bite, the same balance of spicy and sweet. This strive for uniformity also extends to the solutions I architect. Consistent IP schemes, naming structures, uniform configurations and such help make an environment easier to manage and troubleshoot when things go sideways. #Humility. No matter how much heart and soul you put into food, it may not win every time. Hours of toiling over a cooker, wiping the side of a turn-in box of an errant splash of sauce and meticulous placement of meat or removing random pieces of herbs from an entry does not always yield a win. Regardless of the time spent on a proposal or a design, hours spent do not equate to a closed deal every time. Do your best and try to win or close every time, but recognize that you may fail. It’s ok. There’s always next time. Learn and grow. #Camaraderie. Whether I’m rambling about the variety of cooker types, discussing a BBQ technique, explaining a piece of technology, or talking through the features of a product release and how it solves a problem - It's always better to have that mutual respect and kinship with the folks around me. We all have our own story and path, and when we bring those differences together and surround ourselves with people that make us better, we all win. I try to approach every solution I design with the same mind set - it’s always a perfect score when that box hits the turn-in table, because I know I gave it my all. It's all up to the judges after that. I’ll do my best to solve the client’s problem set and bring forth the best solution possible, but at the end of the day it’s still up to the client to sign off on the solution, and hopefully my solution is conveyed in such a way that they see that it'll make their lives easier.
