Sony Semicon | ELTRES (global)’s Post

Following up on the marine theme, this is a translation of a Japanese article about a company who is planning to produce lifejackets with ELTRES technology. The original article (in Japanese) by The Sankei News can be found at the link below. https://lnkd.in/gDC63MSQ Early Detection of Tsunami Victims Life Jackets with GPS Demonstrated in Minami-sanriku Town With the aim of finding and rescuing tsunami victims as soon as possible, a rescue company named "Guardian 72" (based in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo) conducted a demonstration test of a life jacket with GPS function in Minami-sanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture, and confirmed its effectiveness. The company will provide location information received by GPS to disaster response organizations as early as next year and will expedite its practical application to detect tsunami victims and others as early as possible. In Minami-sanriku, 831 people were killed in the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and 211 of them remain missing. Kazukiyo Takahashi, 63, who was in charge of dealing with the bereaved families at the time, felt firsthand that there was a big difference in the grief of the bereaved families due to the discovery of the bodies of the victims compared to those who went missing. "Even if you make a grave while crying after the earthquake, the inside is empty. Some of the bereaved families put soil from their homes inside the grave because they couldn’t find the body. It's too bad to put your hands together on such a grave." Takahashi consulted with Masami Arima, 61, president of Guardian 72, a company that handles disaster response systems, and found that life jackets with GPS were effective for the early rescue and detection of marine disasters. The life jackets are equipped with GPS transmitters, and the communication system uses ELTRES, a low-power long-distance communication system developed by Sony. If there is line-of-sight to the receiver it is possible to receive signal even more than 100 kilometers away. In theory, 10,000 signals containing GPS information can be handled simultaneously. "This system can help with recent diver and small vessel accidents" said Kenji Arashima, senior project manager at the company's business promotion division. In the demonstration test, a diver wearing a GPS life jacket floating five kilometers off the coast of Minamisanriku was able to be located instantly. The Guardian 72 will make life jackets and GPS receivers, and will introduce them to coastal municipalities, diving shops and other related organizations next year. More Information: ELTRES is an LPWA technology which can transmit at long distances (over 100 km) and at high speeds (over 100 km/h) with low power (25mW).
