It was a pleasure to be a co-author and co-advisor for David Broome's second of five planned articles in his PhD in Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Iceland. Entitled, 'Auroral ecosystem services: A cascade model and investigation of co-production processes', this study was published today in the Journal of Ecosystem Services. The paper delves into the stages involved in the formation of auroral ecosystem services (ES) and interactions between the geosphere, biosphere and anthroposphere. This is performed through the development of an auroral ES cascade model with the integration of four main co-production stages: (i) value attribution, (ii) mobilization of ES potential, (iii) value appropriation, and (iv) commercialization. The cascade model is expanded upon in detail by using examples from published academic and grey literature, highlighting the demand for capital inputs and strengthening the conceptual understanding of human-nature relationships in the context of auroral ES. The co-production stages illustrate the importance of action on the demand-side in order for the supply of benefits from auroral ES to be delivered. The potential for feedback from the anthroposphere into geophysical properties, processes and functions through anthropogenic space weather and artificial particle precipitation from the Van Allen Radiation Belts via ionospheric heating and low frequency radio wave generation is emphasized. Additionally, feedback via policy and decision making from the anthroposphere into the biosphere and geosphere is highlighted, especially in the context of managing light pollution and artificial space weather. It is official!!!!!! #japan is officially recognizing #seaweed and #kelp as carbon sequestering ecosystems, and incorporating them into their national carbon emission calculations! This decision will make Japan the first in the world to integrate #algae into their carbon accounting. This means kelp restoration initiatives that support #carbonsequestration and #biodiversity will be a lot easier to finance. Governments, corporates and other organizations that have committed to #decarbonize and restore #nature, can now confidently invest in such projects, knowing that the results will formally count. It makes sense. The problem with fossils is that so few beings were fossilised. It is so rare to find anything with a softer body, and harder bodies are already “innovations”. Maybe we could use something akin to what is used to read subatomic particle collision paths in silicon wafers (with coarser resolution, of course) to see if we can find cellular fossils, or organic molecules, in deeper layers. Depending on finding perfectly-formed, comprehensible and repeated fossils to ascertain a life form is complicated and it happens so rarely. Life is so wonderful and complex, and the more I study, the more I get the impression that we know so little… On another topic: please, BBC News, you of all media shoud not mix “theory” and “hypothesis” as if they meant the same. It is confusing and makes people distrust science.
