#XPRIZERainforest finalist team ETH BiodivX recently made their way to Amazonas, Brazil for finals testing. 🌱 The team has developed technology to collect and analyze eDNA, which is genetic material that's shed from living organisms and gets deposited in the environment. “Traditional methods for monitoring biological species (such as visual inspection) often only work with specific species or a small number of species, but eDNA can detect not only specific species, but all species in the environment, meaning it is possible to monitor all life in nature.” - Martina Lüthi, a postdoctoral researcher at ETH In addition to competing in XPRIZE Rainforest, ETH BiodivX is also designing biomimetic drones. Learn more about the team’s technology in their feature on WIRED. https://lnkd.in/gcmi-Wz3 XPRIZE Rainforest is sponsored by Alana. cc: Instituto Alana, Swissnex in Brazil

Professional musings from the River Styx: As someone who's been in the transportation business for eons (quite literally), I find the concept of #reusable #rockets particularly fascinating. This revolutionary approach not only showcases human innovation but also reflects a sustainable ethos similar to my own practice of ferry reuse. Let's discuss the implications for #space industry professionals. #Innovation #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/dc9Effxy

DX for forestry Kashima will also start a service to support forest conservation for local governments and companies in June. Investigate the forest ecosystem with an autonomous flying drone. It can be measured 30 times faster than the conventional one. In addition to using labor-saving technology for forestry and disaster prevention, they will also incorporate the demand of companies that focus on restoring the ecosystem. Kashima has developed a technology that uses drones to collect about 10 hectares of forest data in a day. Drones can fly automatically while avoiding detected trees. The installed laser scanner measures the thickness of trees and the shape of the earth's surface, and reproduces the forest in a virtual space. The amount of data is more than examining from the sky with satellites and aircraft, and the distribution of tree species and underweeds can also be estimated.

These new findings feel like they were plucked out of the bible... ... aka Jane Jacobs' "Death and Life of Great American Cities" 🤓 In her chapter on "The need for short streets," Jacobs writes: "Let us consider the situation if long blocks had an extra street cut across them... containing buildings where things could start up and grow at spots economically viable: places for buying, eating, seeing things, getting a drink. [People] would no longer need to walk a monotonous always-the-same path to a given point. He would have various alternate routes to choose. They neighborhood would literally have opened up to him." (p. 180) 🧠 Each new physical intersection sparks a new mental interconnection, as Urbanitarian notes: "Turning to new streets turned significant on the mapping, as it showed inflection points. We can see levels of focus and interest shift at these moments." The key to keeping cities alive is keeping brains interested — and not completely overloaded. #urbanplanning #urbanstudies #JaneJacobs
Here is a glimpse into a pilot study we are carrying out to understand the relationship between the built environment and human emotions. 🌳 In this experiment, we targeted the new Linear Super Block - Ejes Verdes - in #barcelona. 🧠 We used the 8-Channel #unicorn from g.tec medical engineering GmbH, where we applied simple formulas on frequency band powers to draw inferences on the emotional states. #urbanism #eeg #barcelona #pilot #WIP #ejes #verdes #superilla #BCN #ecological #urbanism

🌊 CLS is working towards sustainable Ocean Tech. 🌎 #Driftingbuoys are just one of the ways that scientists can obtain the data they need to map and monitor #ocean conditions, assess the impacts of #climatechange and warn about ocean-related natural disasters. 💡 However, there is growing concern that this valuable tool may also be contributing to ocean litter and plastic. CLS’ WOODBUOY, developed with METEO FRANCE, E-Surfmar and Die Bremer Drechlerei aims to address this issue by replacing almost all the plastic with #wood. 🛰 Sustainable Ocean Tech is becoming a reality with CLS’ WOODBUOY thanks to built-in #ARGOS services that will soon provide real-time data, longer battery life and the ability to connect more buoys with the upcoming launch of 25 nanosatellites by Kinéis.
