Probiotic Foods: Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria that naturally live in your gut and contribute to its health. Consuming foods with probiotics can help boost these beneficial bacteria. Examples of Probiotic Foods: - Yogurt: Contains live bacteria cultures like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. - Kefir: A fermented milk drink packed with probiotic bacteria and yeast. - Sauerkraut: Fermented cabbage that's rich in probiotics and fiber. - Kimchi: A spicy fermented cabbage dish, similar to sauerkraut, but with added spices. - Miso: A fermented soybean paste used in Japanese cooking. - Tempeh: A fermented soybean product with a firm texture, often used as a meat substitute. - Pickles (fermented): Fermented cucumbers can be a source of probiotics if they are brined in saltwater and not vinegar. This is from Thomas Delauer and it rings true.... If I could pick 10 foods that I had to eat for the rest of my life, these are what they would be, hands down: 1) Eggs: I am an absolute believer that eggs have just about everything we need in order to survive (at least for a while). So this would 100% be the top of my priority list. 2) Ground Beef: A close second place to eggs. Another food I consider to be a multivitamin. Especially when it comes down to the B-Vitamins that are hard ot get from other sources. And obviously the protein and the collagen. 3) Heavy Cream: Knowing what I know now about C15 fatty acids and the importance of dairy fat in the world of longevity research, this would definitely be on my list. In fact, I think I could survive well with beef, eggs and heavy cream, not to mention the taste of heavy cream is just so damn satisfying. 4) Honey: This would be on my list for a lot of reasons. For one, if I had to pick one carb source for the rest of my life, it would be honey, simple as that. Because I get the antimicrobial benefits in addition to the immune effects, the gut benefit, the glycemic benefit and of course, if I needed a quick burst of anaerobic energy, it would be my go-to sugar source. 5) Broccoli: Probably one of the strongest inherently detoxing foods you could find. The sulforaphane is a remarkable compound that truly does impact how our liver processes and clears out toxins. Out of all the vegetables, I would safely say it is the most potent. 6) Greek Yogurt: I needed to have at least one probiotic food on the list. The literature is quite strong in demonstrating that the only really solid probiotic foods are those that are fermented dairy. Now I certainly love kefir, but I think it makes more sense to choose Greek yogurt so that I can get a benefit from the protein as well. Simple as that. 7) Green Tea: I know it’s not a food, but I truly considerate a super food because it is such a staple for me. There is even evidence to suggest that Japanese men that consume 4-5 cups of green tea per day have significantly longer life expectancy than those that consume 3 or less. 8) Avocados - I really battled if it was going to be macadamia nuts or avocados on this one… They are both such amazing fat sources, BUT I had to go with Avocados simply because not only do I get the Monounsaturated fats, but I also get the fiber and antioxidants than unfortunately I wouldn’t get with Macadamia nuts. 9) Sardines./Mackerel: Hands down, one of the best sources of good quality omega 3, vitamin D, and minerals. It’s a triple whammy. Oh, and of course protein in it’s full spectrum form. 10) Purple Sweet Potatoes: I wanted to add one other carb source/fiber source. I think sweet potatoes are an unusual beast. Because they are a root, they offer all kinds of other benefits outside of regular potatoes. Higher fiber content, higher antioxidant content, prebiotic starches, resistance starches… They really are a gut health savior!
