Greetings everyone. I recently just signed up for my next Axiata volunteering program happening soon called, 'Axiata Volun-tastic Day'. This brought me back to my long overdue post on the last Axiata volunteering program I joined early of the fasting month, Ramadan. The program was known as 'Back To School' where the volunteers were separated into two groups, one in Kedah and another in Pahang. The program was catered to selected MRSM students especially to those who were #underprivileged . What made the program personally special were: 1. I was called a '#teacher' by the students. This was certainly bittersweet, as my late #mother was called 'Teacher Idah' too. It made me feel that I had the skill to teach people. To add on, during the closing night, there was this one activity where the students were asked to reflect and jot down their life journey in a timeline. Many of them jotted 'losing one of their parents' as their lowest / darkest time, and I could relate to it. I was glad that I could be with them at that moment, and assure them that they were not alone. 2. Seeing the students made me recall my days during my 5-years Axiata Young Talent Programme journey. I was in their shoes, having the nervousness to speak in English in front of many, not knowing what to pursue and more. The teaching content was very similar to what I was taught and it was easier for me to teach them within the limited time of preparation. 3. The program was held in my very own university, Universiti Utara Malaysia. It was like having my high school sponsor and university together at the same time, never would I have imagined of. 4. The program was held during the holy month of Ramadan, this just made it more special. 5. The program coordinator Sharaf Guna , was the same person who had been teaching me when I was in Form 2 and now, we were a team working together. How time flies. Those are some overdue sharing. Besides teaching them, I also learned a lot from the students too. I am now looking forward to this upcoming Axiata #volunteering program! There’s making a difference, and then there’s making our difference, together. Each of our 10,000 Spirax Group colleagues worldwide are actively encouraged to take part in activities that matter to them by using up to three paid volunteering days every year. That includes our senior leaders too. At our recent Global Leadership Conference, around 70 of our senior leaders discovered how it feels to swap their office attire and laptops for overalls and shovels when they went to help the volunteering team at Aldenham Country Park. This not-for-profit volunteer-led organisation advocates sustainable food production, and the team share their knowledge and skills with the local community. The volunteers work with children and adults with learning disabilities and mental health challenges on the farm, which not only helps participants to develop physical and cognitive skills but boosts their self-esteem too. The farm’s focus on people and community means that maintenance tasks can fall down the to-do list! That’s where companies like ours can play their part. Getting down to work, our leaders worked in smaller teams to tackle jobs around the farm. Together, they were able to complete more work in a day than the volunteers could get around to in a month, meaning the farm’s regular volunteers could focus their attention on the activities and people who need them the most, In this video, our leaders share how it felt to work together to create a lasting impact. This is my dream job ❤️ Working with organisations like I Have A Dream Trust in Whangārei to have clarity on their purpose and how that weaves through all parts of their organisation -from strategy to operational planning. I Have a Dream Trust provide long term support to tamariki, rangatahi, alongside their whānau, to achieve their dreams. The difference they are making in young lives is incredibly powerful and inspiring! It's been a thought provoking, creative and insightful journey over the past few months as we've worked through articulating their value proposition and re-designing their operating model to grow their impact, embed kaupapa Māori, and meet the future confidently. From that strong core we worked on their strategy and communications to provide the 'true north' of direction and focus, and ensure their community and team are taken along on the waka. Finally, ensuring strategy turns into action through a detailed operational plan. I've learned so much through this process, particularly the importance of feedback, mutual understanding, and staying in the waka until there is shared clarity, agreement and commitment.
