Childhood poverty increased sharply this year, after a remarkable decline during the pandemic. There are hungry kids and families in your community, no matter where you live. Food pantries might be in-the-moment solutions, but I want our neighbors to go to bed at night knowing local food pantries -- the last safety net for the most basic of all needs -- are going to be able to serve them. I also know that meeting people's needs now allows people to not be in crisis, and a whole different set of options arises when you have the brain space to think and strategize. In recognition of today’s Hunger Action Day in Palm Beach County, Rales JFS employees participated in the #SNAPChallenge this month. By living only on the average daily SNAP allowance benefit, participants found themselves forced to make food shopping choices on a limited budget and attempted to stay healthy without adequate resources. Rales JFS Chief Operating Office, Beth Levine, described living on $9 a day for four days to be a significant challenge, requiring careful meal planning and budget shopping. Breakfast consisted of oatmeal ($1.35/day) and tea ($0.25/day). Lunch included hard-boiled eggs, lettuce, cucumber, and tomatoes ($2.75/day). Afternoon snacks were apples ($2.49/day). Dinner options varied between Publix chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes, chicken breasts, and cauliflower, totaling $15.90 for four dinners. As a result, the four days' expenses came to $34.79, with much hunger experienced in the evenings. Family does not let family go hungry. We are thrilled to officially launch our FOOD FORWARD PROGRAM >>> According to the United Nations, one-third of the world’s food is wasted. In the United States, food waste is 40%—enough to feed 2 billion people. Yet, a Census Bureau survey found that 1 in 8 Americans struggle to secure reliable, nutritious food. 1 in 11 struggle across Pennsylvania. To address local food waste and insecurity, Eat Share has been exploring innovative ways to redistribute food to members of our communities. From this endeavor, we have developed Food Forward Donations. ❓What are Food Forward Donations ❓ This initiative welcomes local restaurants, food trucks, caterers, farmers, and grocery stores to donate their excess food, rather than waste it. Eat Share volunteers will collect these donations, package them into meals, and deliver locally. ❓Who can receive a Food Forward Donation❓ We currently service Lycoming, Northumberland, Union & Snyder Counties. There is no assessment or proof of need to receive an Eat Share meal. There’s enough to share, so we do! 🙋♀️ If you would like to be added to our Food Forward donation list, please email us at eatsharelove@yahoo.com. So — as has been this case over the past two holiday seasons — Local Food Forum will publish your food non-profit's annual appeal. Only one condition... please send your pitch directly to me (afraid I don't have the bandwidth to hunt down this content). * I've written several times about Bob Zeni, aka Chicago Tomato Man, who each year grows starter tomato plants in about 120 or so varieties. Bob touched base to ask if I know anyone with greenhouse/hoop house/warehouse space to spare next spring. I don't, but maybe you do? * Last week, during the Thanksgiving turkey binge, I implored readers to save the bones and turn them into turkey stock. Today's issue shows me walking the walk. Now through November 17, we are hosting a food drive to give back to our communities. Our goal is to collect over 1,000 item to donate to local food pantries. In Northwest Indiana, food insecurity is a critical challenge that demands our attention. This issue, characterized by limited access to nutritious meals, affects approximately 100,000 residents – that's one in every six individuals in our community. Notably, LaPorte, Starke, and St. Joseph counties report food insecurity rates surpassing the national average. LaPorte County stands out with a child food insecurity rate that is a staggering 36.3% higher than the average across the country. Financially, the impact is equally concerning, with an immense annual food budget shortfall in these areas. As professionals and community members, it's imperative that we address this issue and work collaboratively to find sustainable solutions.
