Speaking at the Hertford Civic Society event today, BTA Chairman Nick de Bois CBE highlighted the importance of tourism to the local economy. The Visitor Economy in Hertfordshire is growing. In 2022 it welcomed 25 million visitors and was worth over £.2.2 billion (40% up on 2021); it also provided nearly 39k tourism related jobs to the local region, 6% of total employment in Hertfordshire. We are working with the #LocalVisitorEconomyPartnership, Visit Herts, to help the region become more sustainable and resilient, through a simplified regional structure for English tourism, as well as business support, training and championing of domestic tourism. LVEPs will also play a greater role in national and local policy, strategy and decision-making, and when bidding for funding. As well as transforming the tourism landscape of England, we are also developing a new regenerative tourism strategy to ensure tourism is developed in a way that supports local communities and the environment. Nick also highlighted VisitBritain’s upcoming campaign #StarringGREATBritain that will use film and TV experiences as the hook to inspire visits now to drive spend across all of the UK. VisitBritain’s research shows that 7 in 10 UK visitors have visited a film or TV location in the UK. The campaign, launching in January, is harnessing this trend, putting our destinations as the STAR of show and showcasing our regional diversity to drive visitor spend across the country now.
