𝗧𝗠𝗙'𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀   𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦: 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴   The main aim of this project is to reconcile conservation and community wellbeing in an ecologically sensitive environment, the Groenvlei-Swartvlei mouth dunes, identified as one of Knysna’s natural wonders. This collaboration between the Sustainability Research Unit (SRU) of Nelson Mandela University (NMU), the Smutsville Informal Settlement Forum (SISF) and the Knysna Municipality (KM) hopes to weave different forms of knowledge and ways of knowing to leverage inclusive conservation in the sensitive coastal dunes surrounding the Smutsville informal and formal settlements in Sedgefield.   This participatory action-research initiative was co-designed to empower and build capacity in conservation and sustainability transformation, with a particular focus on community leaders, women, and youth. In the final year, the project will sponsor at least one community-led conservation initiative, co-designed through the engagement process, and coordinated by SISF. ➡️ If you've been keeping a close eye on the news the past week, you may have heard of the disappointing budget for Alberta's nature and confusing policy singling out certain energy sources. Alberta's conservation needs are complex and that means wholistic solutions are needed. 💡 ℹ️ This means working towards land use plans that take into account community needs and the sustainability of different activities on sensitive ecosystems. As an example, there are many existing and overlapping threats to Alberta's Eastern Slopes, and, various conflicting interests in the region. Thanks to the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation we've had the flexibility to address conservation needs in Alberta's Eastern Slopes with a wholistic approach. 🌱 Public advocacy, stakeholder engagement and engaging with governments at all levels is essential to greater conservation and the protection of nature in our most sensitive ecosystems.

🔍What are youth perspectives on Nature-Based Solutions? How can youth become further involved in their development and implementation? We try to answer these questions through your answers to our survey. More than half of the respondents are familiar with Nature-Based Solutions and heard about the Nature Restoration Law (which makes us very happy and proud). Many participated in Nature-Based Solutions initiatives such as reforestation projects, green infrastructure and coastal restoration. Other responses included indigenous agriculture, organic farming and wetland restoration, underlying the variety of NBS. These opportunities were mostly possible through volunteering, activism and Erasmus projects. Those who did not take part in such activities lament the lack of opportunities or information where they live or are more interested in other topics. 📣 Can you mention in the comments the names of specific NBS initiatives to get involved in? What do the results of our social impact assessment of the Yaeda Valley REDD project tell us? It validates Carbon Tanzania's impact hypothesis - that when Indigenous people have rights over their land and resources, they will prioritise protecting their forest. 🌳 94% of participants in the assessment are aware of the by-laws that govern what people can do with the land. 📜 A regulated land-use plan has been successfully monitored by Village Game Scouts throughout the period studied. Combined with community education on the environment and carbon, these efforts has drastically reduced tree cutting. 📈 Reduced tree consumption through sustainable practices has further strengthened forest conservation efforts. 🌳 What is the outcome of a protected forest? It is different for every community, but for the Hadza it is the preservation of their culture and people. 🌿Bridging Opportunity Gaps in Inner Mongolia🌿 The Nature Conservancy programme and the Julius Baer Foundation tackle wealth inequality in Inner Mongolia by training local herders in Grassland Smart Management (GSM), a sustainable grazing technique that restores soil resilience and health. The project aims to strengthen the local community by fostering the creation of cooperatives that integrate poor and wealthy herders, who will collaborate to reduce economic risks and build sustainable livelihoods.
