ASR honors and recognizes International Maritime Organization's World Maritime Day today! 50 years ago this year the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was adopted. Today, this remains the main and most important international treaty concerning the safety of merchant ships. #WorldMaritimeDay #NavigatingtheFuture

Hello, folks! I hope you all are doing great. I am sharing my newly published article in The Manila Times, titled “Was recent skirmish at Scarborough Shoal a calculated diversionary tactic?” Please feel free to share if you like. Have a lovely and blessed weekend to all! .. The recent skirmish at Scarborough Shoal, where Chinese Air Force aircraft allegedly dropped flares in the path of a Philippine Air Force NC-212i plane, is a significant and alarming event in the ongoing maritime tensions and disputes in the South China Sea (SCS) between the Philippines and China. Nevertheless, it is indeed puzzling why the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. would choose to engage in such a high-risk and provocative action, where a Philippine Air Force aircraft deliberately entered the airspace over Scarborough Shoal — especially considering that the shoal is under de facto Chinese control. The Chinese response to such a move from the Philippines was predictably swift and firm, given their established presence and assertiveness in the area. This raises the question of whether this action was intended as a diversionary tactic aimed at shifting public attention away from the mounting domestic challenges facing the Marcos Jr. administration. The current government is under significant scrutiny, grappling with a host of allegations and controversies, including…. To read more, click the link below; Link: https://lnkd.in/g6KJy452

Mare Liberum (or The Freedom of the Seas) is a book in Latin on international law written by the Dutch jurist and philosopher Hugo Grotius, first published in 1609. In The Free Sea, Grotius formulated the then new principle that the sea was international territory and all nations were free to use it for seafaring trade. The disputation was directed towards the Portuguese Mare clausum policy and their claim of monopoly on the East Indian Trade, so not completely without self-interest. Operation Prosperity Guardian, from a coalition led by USA and UK, with (symbolical) military support from The Netherlands, is also not without self-interest. 30% of the world’s containers pass the Red Sea and the Houthi’s are attacking merchant ships, so the big carriers must take the much longer route via Cape Good Hope, which makes the trip 7-10 days longer. After several warnings the coalition is now counterattacking the Houthi’s As a consequence (‘matters affecting performance’) the carriers are increasing their rates and according to shippers these increases are disproportionally high, but they lack the power to resist this act of self-interest. On the longer term the success of Prosperity Guardian is uncertain. It will take much more than just airraids to counter the rockets, drones and other missiles from the Houthi’s. Another illustration of the VUCA world where we live in and the need for resilient Supply Chains. #SCM, #VUCA, #resilience

The #shipping industry must continue to focus on the maritime security situation in the Red Sea, according to the Asian Shipowners' Association. Increased military presence and maritime patrols notwithstanding, the ASA Safe Navigation and Environment Committee also cited the renewed threat of piracy off African coasts. #redsea #maritime https://lnkd.in/gckKAt96

Was pleasure being on #cnbc Asia Squak Box this morning with Martin Soong and Sri Jegarajah discussing continued #disruptions at #redsea. The situation has only worsened in recent weeks with naval security operation yet to materially restore safe passage of navagation. Container shipping will continue to face challenges and #supplychains are likely to stay in disarray with repercussions for months to come. #oilmarkets are less impacted in the short term but situation remains volatile for the foreseeable future. #shipping #commoditymarkets S&P Global Shipping by S&P Global Commodity Insights S&P Global Commodity Insights

Have you noticed that, Most of the colonies the The Dutch established, happen to be coastal colonies? They heavily favored coastal regions for their colonies. There were two main reasons for this: 1. Trade Advantage: The Dutch were a maritime powerhouse during their "Golden Age". Coasts provided easy access for their ships to load and unload cargo, establish ports, and build infrastructures for trade. This efficiency/Advantage was crucial for their global trade-networks. 2. Defense and Control: Coastal locations offered greater defensibility against potential rivals. They could use their naval superiority to patrol and protect their maritime colonies & trade-posts. Additionally, controlling ports allowed them to regulate and tax incoming and outgoing goods, further strengthening their economic grip. So, yes, these coastal colonies were instrumental in the Dutch expanding and maintaining their global maritime trade. They provided vital hubs for commerce and secured their dominance on the seas. Painting by Vincent Van Gogh (Famous Dutch Painter).
