I just wrapped up a great experience at CIGRE US Grid of the Future Symposium in Kansas City.  It was very exciting for me to present  on "A Framework for Assessing Marginal Cost Pricing Through a System Reliability Lens," in a great session moderated by Darren E. Campbell, P.E. Electric Power Engineers is a member of CIGRE, a great thought leadership, research and industry platform; we plan to play a significant part in the future. Perhaps I will see you in CIGRE Paris in August 2024. EPE’s director of energy market analysis, Mohamed Ahmed (Sadek), Ph.D., P.Eng., MIEEE, joined me for the event as well and was a valuable contributor to the paper underlying our presentation that we submitted to CIGRE. We had great discussions with the other session members including Jessica Lau from Xcel Energy who presented on “Exploring Customer Interoperability Pathways with the Utility and Grid Service Providers,” and Danial Nazemi from the PJM Interconnection who presented “Exploring the Benefits of Demand Response in the PJM Wholesale Energy Market: A Cost-Benefit Perspective.” Great content and I encourage others to find their presentation and paper from the CIGRE portal. All sessions were rich in content, with several on distribution and the grid edge, blackout insights and the dissolving T&D seams with excellent presenters, emphasizing the need to accelerate addressing the need for more reliability and resilience metrics. The entire conference echoed in parts and pieces, and then holistically, the need for new products and services to address the gaps in our systems (aka markets, study process, and regulatory) framework so we can incentivize the development of the right infrastructure and resources that tie into reliability and resilience. This is needed in order to keep the lights on during our journey toward a clean energy transition with all the challenges in the mix. And... if you have not met John McDonald in his role as VP for Technical Activities for USNC of CIGRE, I encourage you to attend future events he organizes. I'd like to extend my gratitude to CIGRE for organizing such a comprehensive event and to everyone who attended my presentation. Let's continue to innovate and shape the future of energy together! Our Paper has been accepted for the CIRED 2024 Conference in Vienna! After our positive experience last year, we eagerly sought participation in this year's CIRED conference. We are pleased to announce the acceptance of our submitted research paper, titled "KEY TAKEAWAYS AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF A LOCAL FLEXIBILITY MARKET IMPLEMENTATION AT E.ON HUNGARY", in which we served as co-authors and share our experiences regarding the introduction and real-life behavior of our complex DSO Flexibility platform that works at all voltage levels (HV, MV, LV) and covers two DSOs area. Gridwise Alliance member organizations, the AES Corporation and LineVision, Inc., recently announced that they have published a case study related to the ongoing demonstration project from the largest single deployment of Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR) in the United States. "This milestone deployment represents a major step forward in assessing the potential of Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) to increase transmission capacity and integrate renewable power generation on the grid." We're thrilled to announce that our project coordinator, Dr. Stephan Krenek, leader of the "Photonic Thermometry" Working Group at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) recently had the opportunity to present our project at the 2nd Symposium KRITIS: Sensor and Monitoring Solutions for the Protection of Critical Infrastructures. The symposium, which took place at PTB facilities in Berlin-Charlottenburg on Thursday June 20th, provided an invaluable platform to introduce the innovative and emerging fibre-optic thermometry technology to a distinguished audience of experts in critical infrastructure security. It was an excellent opportunity to highlight the importance of developing the fibre-optic thermometry technology as an innovative solution for optimisation and monitoring of critical infrastructure. In his presentation, Dr Krenek underscored the intrinsic link between fibre-optic sensor technology and the ongoing energy transition. Due to distributed sensing and immunity to electromagnetic fields, these sensors can be used to improve measurement of temperature in extreme environments encountered by energy providers and industrial facilities. Fibre-optic sensors play a pivotal role in advancing temperature measurement precision, crucial for applications in thermal storage, geothermal energy, and throughout the entirety of power grid infrastructure and energy-intensive industrial processes. Fibre-optic thermometry will impact the development of a conductive and flexible power grid. Beyond enhancing security and optimization of energy critical infrastructure, it promises to be a significant contribution to substantial reductions in overall energy consumption, setting the stage for a sustainable and resilient energy future. #energy #fibreopticsensors #criticalinfrastructure #powergrid #thermalstorage

Timely report from RMI. https://lnkd.in/gemwKNas Excellent to see this acknowledgement and validation of something we've believed for a long time: technologies like LineVision's Dynamic Line Rating system can solve some serious transmission issues. "Among other things, the modeling found that DLRs, which measure a transmission line’s capacity in real-time, could boost the summertime ratings of power lines by 17% on average compared to static ratings. Under the modeling, DLR was applied to 49 transmission overloads across the five-state study footprint, facilitating the integration of 5.2 GW of interconnecting generation."
