One of the features I truly appreciate in #dbt is its DAG diagrams. They provide a clear way to track dependencies between models, making it easy to see how changes to one model impact others. This capability is crucial when modifying a data model, as it allows you to understand how upstream and downstream models are interconnected.
However, traditional databases often lack this level of flexibility. Recently, I encountered a challenge when migrating code from one database to another. My main difficulty was understanding how the upstream models were constructed and which downstream models would be affected by changes in a specific stored procedure.
After exploring various approaches, I discovered a useful query (#SQLServer syntax, though similar approaches may work in other databases) that lists all the database objects affected by a particular model.
Stay tuned for more updates!
