Secure World Foundation and the Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) are partnering to organize the 2024 International Workshop on Space Resources: Perspectives for Future Ecosystems in São José dos Campos, Brazil. This workshop will be a thematic follow-on to the 2023 International Workshop on Space Resources Perspectives of Emerging Space Programs which was organized by SWF and several Korean research institutes in November 2023. Discussion at this event will focus on regional perspectives on the ways space resource activities will contribute to the future development of the space sector and its benefits.

It is an industry that touches nearly every other—from healthcare, to climate, to banking, to agriculture, etc. During "Find Your Place in Space Week", people across the nation will take a deep dive into all that space has to offer. Sixty years ago today (22 April) the 1964-1965 World’s Fair opened in New York. Hailing itself as a universal and international exposition, the fair's theme was "Peace Through Understanding", dedicated to "Man's Achievement on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe". This theme was symbolised by a 12-storey high, stainless-steel model of the Earth called the Unisphere, which unlike many of the other exhibits remains on display in a Flushing Meadows park. Primarily staged to mark the 300th anniversary of the naming of New York, the fair provided a range of companies and futurists the chance to give visitors a glimpse into the future. Among many, Disney unveiled the “It’s a Small World” attraction; Ford motor company released the Mustang; Radio Corporation of America showcased a colour television; Bell Laboratories debuted a picturephone; architect Minoru Yamasaki presented a scale model of the soon to be built twin towers World Trade Center; while at the IBM pavilion you could learn about things which happened on a certain date in a very early prototype ‘Google’. I’d loved to have gone. Later in the year, to coincide with the fair, renowned science-fiction author and futurist Isaac Asimov had an essay published in the New York Times https://shorturl.at/BHTXZ in which he pondered what the world would look like 50 years from then, so in 2014. Asimov’s wide-ranging predictions cover a bunch of subjects including technological advances as well as the future state of human society. Much of it was scarily accurate, with some naturally being way off. For those of us in the communications space, I found his predictions crazily intuitive. “Communications will become sight-sound and you will see as well as hear the person you telephone. The screen can be used not only to see the people you call but also for studying documents and photographs and reading passages from books. Synchronous satellites, hovering in space, will make it possible for you to direct-dial any spot on earth, including the weather stations in Antarctica.” In case you are wondering the international dial code for Antarctica is +672.

This week, I’m in South Africa to reaffirm STFC’s partnership with the The National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF). In 2021, I signed a memorandum of understanding with NRF CEO Dr Fulufhelo Nelwamondo. We agreed to come together for the mutual benefit of scientific research in our countries and the world over, building on our relationship as hosts of the much-anticipated Square Kilometre Array. Nearly three years on, this agreement has yielded great results such as support for the University of Leeds-led DARA project, which is building radio astronomy capability across Africa. We have also recently announced two further investments to bolster international physics capabilities through research programmes linking the UK and Africa in partnership with NRF as well as the Institute of Physics that will address wide reaching topics including green energy and climate change: https://lnkd.in/ec3VgHr4 If we are going to continue to break ground in physics and answer fundamental questions such as how our universe evolved, we need to take an increasingly international outlook on how we approach research. This means coming together as an international community to build strong scientific networks to tackle the problems we all face.
