Big News in Medtech: Edwards Sets Acquisition Sights on Innovalve & Affluent Medical Stake Following a recent divestiture, Edwards is doubling down on owning the structural heart space. On Monday, Edwards announced exciting plans to acquire Innovalve Bio Medical, an Israel-based startup specializing in transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) technologies. With a forecasted closing by the end of the year, this acquisition represents a $300 million investment in advancing cardiovascular health. But that's not all. In a separate but equally strategic move, Edwards has also declared a €15 million (~$16.3 million) agreement with Affluent Medical. This deal gives Edwards a 9.21% equity stake in the French company and includes an exclusive option to acquire Affluent's Kephalios subsidiary, which specializes in adjustable cardiac mitral rings, and a global license for their biomimetic mitral valve replacement technology. The investment further underscores Edwards' commitment to expanding its portfolio in the mitral valve space. This dual acquisition strategy couldn't come at a more opportune time. Earlier this year, Edwards achieved a significant milestone with their Evoque device receiving FDA approval as the first transcatheter treatment for tricuspid regurgitation, eliminating the need for open-heart surgery. Edwards' new moves to purchase Innovalve and invest in Affluent Medical's technologies show their dedication to treating complex mitral diseases with a more differentiated range of therapies. At the beginning of February, Avation Medical announced having raised $22M in a Series C round of financing to support the launch of their Vivally neuromodulation system. This achievement represents a significant vote of confidence by a group of savvy investors in a patient-controlled neuromodulation therapy with intermittent stimulation for controlling some of the more troubling symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB), including urinary urge incontinence and urgency. OAB affects 33 million adults in the United States alone, and this number is expected to continue growing as the population ages. 😶 We have previously posted about the emerging trend away from more invasive and complex neuromodulation therapies that deliver continuous stimulation, moving towards simpler, less invasive neuromodulation therapies that patients can self-administer intermittently at home. There will likely always be a place for implanted neuromodulation systems that deliver stimulation automatically and without requiring patients to think about their therapy on a daily or weekly basis. However, the biggest unmet need and growth opportunity may lie with the untapped body of patients who prefer not to have a device implanted in their body at all, or if they must have an implant, for it to be as small and minimally invasive as possible. We anticipate that a large group of OAB patients will be willing to self-administer their neuromodulation therapy to avoid the potential complications associated with more invasive therapies. Avation’s investors are undoubtedly anticipating the same thing and are backing their anticipation with substantial funding. Our UCon System for dorsal genital nerve stimulation is being developed to potentially offer advantages over existing solutions, including Avation's. And to support its expansion plans it is seeking to raise millions from investors.</p> <p>The Chesptow-based firm has created a single-use endoscopy device that has potential to revolutionise early diagnosis of a range of cancers and gastro-intestinal conditions.</p> <p>The firm is now seeking further growth capital with a new equity investment round that could raise £5m to £8m. The business said the investment would support the creation of 100 new jobs over the next three years.
