I started working at a Magic Circle Law Firm at 21. I was at the time one of the youngest people in the firm. I joined with no degree, my three A-levels and experience working part-time for an ed tech company. After seeing Oscar Hoyle’s post (do check it out) around perception of age and ability I knew I had to share my experience. The stereotype between age, ability and education really does baffle me; more importantly it discourages people’s ambition. The reality is that success doesn’t have to be a degree. Without a degree at 21 I was: - Managing six figure budgets for programmes; - Assisting with Facilitating professional development talks for clients; - Co-Chairing a committee at the firm to steer change on a topic I’m passionate about. 🎉 Celebrating One Year 🎉 It's hard to believe that it's been a year since I fished my incredible journey of becoming a lawyer, after training in-house at Beamery. Reflecting on the past twelve months, I've come to realize that every day truly is a learning day in this dynamic profession that I work in - the learning doesn’t stop once the lectures end, nor when you finish your last exam, nor when you complete your training contract. From negotiating commercial contracts worth over £4 Million, to advising on data retention practises, to discussing new AI laws, each experience this year has been another stepping stone towards growth and development. But perhaps the most valuable lesson that I’ve learned is the importance of celebrating the wins, no matter how small they may seem. In a field and an industry where challenges are constant, taking the time to acknowledge achievements – whether it's securing a favorable outcome for your company or mastering a new legal concept – is crucial for maintaining motivation and resilience. I've also discovered the power of collaboration and mentorship in propelling my career forward. Learning from seasoned lawyers and collaborating across departments with key stakeholders at Beamery has been instrumental in broadening and refining my commercial awareness and approach to problem-solving. As I continue my legal journey, I carry with me a deep appreciation for the lessons learned, the relationships forged, and the victories celebrated along the way. It's already been two months in New York - time flies! 🥲 As I reflect on the past two months at Noerr in New York, I am filled with gratitude and excitement. Here are two of my personal takeaways that may shape my future career: 1. I never thought I would enjoy working in a small team so much. Most of my previous jobs were in big law firms with hundreds of people in an office, and although Noerr is a big firm, the New York office is comparatively small. The nice thing about it is that you get to know your colleagues quite well and we have more of a "family atmosphere" here. 2. Working on cross-border transactions has been amazing and is something I want to continue doing. You see the law from a different perspective, i.e. American clients who know a very different system than the German one. Further, the complexity and diversity of these transactions is intellectually stimulating, and I enjoy the challenge of navigating the legal landscapes of multiple jurisdictions.
