The Paris 2024 Olympic Village is designed for long-term, sustainable use. It represents an understanding of the impact that the Games have on residents and a departure from how Villages have historically been developed. It is not without its flaws, but Paris has demonstrated how the design and development of Olympic Villages can really go for the gold. #Paris #Olympics #2024Olympics #sustainability #urbandesign #OlympicVillage https://lnkd.in/gYHJqMSZ

Hot on the heels of CHANEL coming to town last year and taking over the Northern Quarter with their annual Metiers D'Art show.. Now The New York Times has tipped Manchester to be one of the best places to travel to in 2024, alongside esteemed company including New Zealand, Japan and The Caribbean. Alongside being a music mecca - the city is seeing a swathe of new wellness, fitness and sporting attractions by developers Peel Waters at the brownfield Trafford site. Peel's tagline seals the deal for me - "Shaping future lifestyles : creating happy, healthy and sustainable communities". Perfect! Some of the developments include - THERME GROUP the UK's first city-based wellbeing resort with thermal bathing, an urban beach, botanical gardens, a farm and living water slides. I LOVE that their website specifically calls out 'healthy and nutritious food for all the family'.... Finally a leisure destination in the UK that serves decent food! Wavegarden - the first inland surf destination in the north of England will be a gamechanger for landlocked surfers. The two-hectare lagoon, powered by artificial wave technology will feature surf academy, clubhouse, restaurant, shop and viewing terraces. I might make the World Surf League yet! The Padel Club are building an 11 court facility will feature a pair of open-air courts and nine covered courts and a social clubhouse. Fives Soccer Centres - FA affiliated; bigger than regular five-a side pitches. These developments join existing attractions Trafford Golf Centre, Dino Falls Adventure Golf (my boys loved this a few back), Chill Factore, Play Factore, and iFLY Indoor Skydiving. It's no surprise that TraffordCity, Manchester attracts 44 million visits a year. If you're tempted to explore a brand activation in Manchester, drop me a line. #Manchester #BrandActivation #NYTimes #WellnessMarketing

The 2024 Paris Olympics are less than three months away; and if there's something that gets me more excited than nations competing in sport at the highest level, it's optimizing the movements of millions of people in our cities. Citymapper is working with Paris's transport agency, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) to manage travel flow during the 2024 Olympic Games this summer! There's been a lot of discussion around how the City's public transport system will cope with the 15 million+ expected visitors. Luckily, Citymapper is offering users IDFM-approved routes that are designed to minimize overcrowding and keep things running smoothly for locals and tourists alike. https://lnkd.in/gaYNmS_z

Is Outdoor Thermal Comfort (#OTC) influencing #Olympic outcomes? 🤔 As the #Paris2024 Olympic Games end, more than 1000 medals have been awarded across numerous disciplines, many of which were practiced outdoor. But could OTC be a hidden factor in determining who wins or loses a #medal? 🏅 Unlike pedestrians in urban areas, who can choose their paths, athletes on the field have no such luxury. Their movements are dictated by the game, leaving them at the mercy of local microclimatic conditions. This makes it crucial to create a thermally equitable environments for all competitors, ensuring optimal performance without introducing unintended biases. Considering the #time, competitions scheduled during the hottest part of the day may lead to increased fatigue, impacting performance. This is relevant in team sports, where the timing of a match can affect the effectiveness of players and their tiredness at the end of the day (in view of the following matches), and in individual sports like #athletics, where athletes competing in cooler hours may have a distinct advantage in making their scores.⏱ Disparities in local #microclimate also play a significant role in simultaneous events. Take the photo of a beach #volleyball match at Stade Tour Eiffel, for example: the team on the right might benefit from the net’s shadow, but playing against the sun can cause glare. Even when shadows are evenly distributed, sports with asymmetric starting positions, like #tennis, can see scores influenced by situational disparities. A photo from Roland-Garros shows how a server in full shade has a potential advantage over a receiver exposed to direct sunlight. ☀ Moreover, athletes from warmer climates may be better adapted to Parisian #heatwaves, while those from cooler regions might struggle, since ethnicity and climate of origin affect metabolism and thermal tolerance. 🌡 Given how small differences in scores can determine the outcome, it's possible that factors like OTC, which might seem minor, could significantly influence the results. Incorporating these considerations into the #planning of important sports events is challenging but essential to promote #fair competition. 🤝 📸: https://lnkd.in/eKgEKRnh; https://lnkd.in/e6EcqsCS; https://lnkd.in/eUe3gUrV

I feel fortunate to have traveled to many parts of the world—North America, the UK, Europe, and even Oceania. This trip was a return to one of my favorite cities, Paris. But this time, it's different. Paris is the host city for the Paralympic Games. The already busy city will add 4,000 athletes and tens of thousands of spectators, all competing for accessible resources like accommodations and transportation. I was motivated to go for the fencing, events, which many of you may already know is a passion of mine. To make this trip successful, planning was a must. I usually start with accommodations. I chose to stay at a hotel I’ve used before. It's a bit far from the venues I’m interested in, but I know it's accessible, and the staff work hard to help me solve any problems I encounter. To secure the best rate, I booked and prepaid for the stay months in advance. The next step was finding flights. To minimize connections and possible delays, I worked to find the most direct route: Winnipeg to Montreal to Paris. I chose flights with at least a three-hour connection. These flights were convenient but, as a result, more expensive. The last part of the plan was securing wheelchair-accessible transport for when I arrived in the city. Months before the Paralympics, media outlets worldwide raised concerns about limited accessible transportation in Paris. Local disability groups recommended having three backup options for getting to and from the venues. I arranged two. With the help of my hotel, I found a driver with an accessible van that could be reserved in advance by the hour, essentially an accessible limousine. I chose this option for airport and venue trips—secure and reliable, but costly. I also learned that one of the taxi companies had a fleet of accessible vans that could be booked as needed through an app. This option was less expensive but potentially limited in availability. With my preplanning done, passport and credit card in hand, I was ready to begin the trip. Join me for part two of this post in the coming days. #accessibility #travel #paralympics #Paris2024
