Your Beach Access to San Onofre State Park is at Risk – Sign the Petition Now! 👏 San Onofre State Beach is a treasured natural resource for millions of people from across Southern California and beyond. Since 1971, California has leased the 6.5-mile shoreline as a state park from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for the sweetheart deal of $1 for the duration of the 50-year lease. That lease will expire on August 31 of this year and must meet new federal regulations that demand fair market value. The Surfrider Foundation appreciates and applauds the past and present leadership of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and California State Parks for their dedication to preserving this unique stretch of undeveloped coastline and their ongoing commitment to maintaining public access at San Onofre State Beach. While all parties involved in the lease renewal have publicly committed to maintaining public access, a federal statute (10 U.S. Code § 2667) now mandates fair market value for military land leases. This requirement, coupled with federal bureaucracy, could create complications despite the best of intentions. That’s why Surfrider is working with the San Onofre Parks Foundation and local stakeholders to protect the public’s ability to access and enjoy this iconic shoreline, as well as the long-term preservation and natural resilience of San Onofre State Beach. Take action now to ensure that San Onofre State Beach continues to be accessible to all for generations to come. https://hubs.la/Q02vrsww0 #SaveSanO #SurfriderFoundation #TheOceanNeedsMoreFriends

Momentum is building around the need to find innovative and efficient solutions in support of shipbuilding and sustainment. 👏👏👏👏 Recent articles in Proceedings, the SIOP, and even the Surface Navy National Symposiom happening in DC this week provide examples on where discussions, collaborations, and thought leadership are pursuing tangible results. 💡💭🗣️ While it’s easy to focus on the shiny object that is a fresh-off-the-line ship, let’s not forget the communities and conditions surrounding the yards (many of which aren’t so shiny) ⚓️🚢🛳️🏠 The United States has always been a sea-faring nation. It has a long and proud tradition full of legends and lore. Behind each one of the these are the towns, ports, and people that have committed to making this country and its Navy exceptional. 🇺🇸💙 https://lnkd.in/ede6XPnJ

“The countryside has been neglected for decades. A Rural New Deal would reverse that with capital and creative solutions writen by and for rural Americans.” The problem is education. One example below is someone returning to rural West VA after a college education. The problem with that is that the level of education of the average rural American isn’t even enough to make them employable at anything other than menial tasks. And that is because that consider education as “liberal and woke”. More than 75% of Americans can’t qualify for the minimum standards for the U.S. military. Many of those Americans can’t pass the minimum score on the education tests for recruitment. The U.S. Army has a “prep school” for those that can’t and the success rate for those attending the Future Warriors Camp is 95%. Yet many who want to go into the Army but can’t make the minimum standards will not attend becuase it is “woke”. The problems in rural America are cultural.

"From the intricacy of the channels and the strength of the forts, it is probable that #Boston could not be attacked with any hope of success." So wrote Rear Admiral Sir Alexander Milne of Britain's Royal Navy in an 1861 report. Fort Warren on George's Island in #BostonHarbor is a nice spot for a day trip and a picnic, thanks to #MassDCR, but it was built as the linchpin of Boston Harbor's defenses between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, as part of a system of over 40 fortifications constructed by the #ArmyCorpsofEngineers to protect US harbors. In her original condition, Fort Warren was designed for an armament of about 300 heavy cannon, some of which were protected by granite walls eight feet thick (the granite came from Cape Ann and Quincy, MA). In fighting trim, the fort would have been a difficult or impossible target for any fleet of wooden ships of the day. Boston also had two additional harbor forts at the time-- Fort Independence on Castle Island (which used to be an actual island), and Fort Winthrop, the remains of which are somewhere under #LoganAirport. As a footnote, in Admiral Milne's younger days, he was one of the people chiefly responsible for shutting down the transatlantic slave trade during the 1830s and 1840s by intercepting slave ships at sea. #engineering #waterfront #acoe #SAME #history #islands #construction #boston #bostonharborislands

Passionate Strategist | Leveraging Technology & Finance for Infrastructure, Maritime & Logistics | Driving Innovation in LatAm & Caribbean.
This article highlights a crucial challenge for the US maritime industry. While attracting new US mariners is essential, exploring talent from Latin America and the Caribbean could provide a much-needed boost. Streamlining credentialing processes for qualified mariners from these regions could unlock a significant pool of skilled personnel with the consequent redeployment of US mariners currently employed in non-essential roles to be transitioned to fill critical gaps. #maritimeindustry

The Royal Naval Training Establishment Shotley, also known as HMS Ganges, was a naval training facility at Shotley Gate, near Ipswich in Suffolk. It operated between 1901 and 1976 but has largely lain empty since its closure. The site is now a conservation area with three listed structures, including the mast on the parade ground and a 1930s swimming pool, and two Martello towers (scheduled ancient monuments). Babergh District Council granted approval in 2015 for construction of 285 new dwellings across the site. We have strongly objected to a Section 73 application to amend the original approval. Instead of adaptively reusing the remaining former naval buildings, it now seeks to demolish and replace nearly all the unlisted structures, including the former dormitory and mess buildings pictured above, and the former Signals School building. The buildings represent the various phases of expansion, and their locations and roles are important to understanding the former use of the site, as well as giving context to the listed buildings and scheduled monuments. The amended plans do not present any additional reasoning, other than cost, that would prevent their reuse and adaption, as per the original permission. The wider historic form centred on the parade ground would be lost to a standard suburban layout and greatly erode the overall character of the conservation area. #Casework #Shotley #Ipswich #Suffolk #Planning #Heritage #HistoricBuildings #HistoricArchitecture

-------------------------------------- STATEMENT ON THE AIR CANADA INCIDENT -------------------------------------- April 28th, 2024 Having collaborated extensively with Chiefs, Tribal Chiefs, and Federated leadership, I am deeply disturbed by the recent disrespect shown towards our National Chief regarding her headdress. Air Canada's apology marks a step forward, and it is crucial that this incident becomes a pivotal learning opportunity in Canada's ongoing Reconciliation efforts. Indigenous headdresses are much more than simple artifacts; they are palpable representations of our collective sovereignty, title, and jurisdiction over our lands and resources. These symbols embody our resilience and steadfast determination to persevere and survive. #AFN #AirCanada #GovernmentofCanada
