S O L A R I U M S I learnt a new thing on site at Agar Grove Phase 3 today about our ‘solarium’ experiment. What we’re calling a solarium is essentially an internalised balcony space. We did this to reduce thermal envelope area to improve the Form Factor for the Passivhaus PHPP model. Apparently the apartments with solariums in lieu of standard balconies are performing much better in terms of air-tightness after recent pre-completion testing. This is because they are opened up with casement windows (rather than doors to a level balcony threshold). The seal around a window casement is more consistent than a door which has a weaker seal at the bottom. Better air tightness, better thermal performance. Danny Man, the site project manager for Hill Partnerships, has been working all hours - sometimes into the early hours thermally testing the building. Completion due in spring. Warm Roof - Library & Cultural Centre - Virginia, Co.Cavan As part of the renovation and energy upgrade of the existing traditional building, a warm roof was installed using a rigid wood fibre insulation board over the rafters and sheepswool between the rafters below. A vertical counter batten is fitted over the breathable membrane, and fixed through into the rafters below. By doing this, you move the required ventilation area to the outside, thus allowing you to fully fill the rafters below. This both eliminates thermal bridging through the rafters and optimises the u value of the roof. A tile batten and tiles are then installed. Our value as Landscape Architects is increasing as today’s clients value innovative and creative solutions to their projects. Our clients are seeking to stand out from their competition to draw in new customers, clients, tenants, home-buyers, etc. As a Kimley-Horn Landscape Architect, I see the value of being part of a multi-disciplinary team that values innovation. For instance, we have several recent projects where we asked ourselves, “Can a parking lot be more than just a parking lot? Can it contribute to the pedestrian experience or serve multiple purposes?” We thought beyond the typical parking solutions, coordinated with our Civil Engineering partners, and integrated curb-less vehicular and pedestrian areas, using bollards to separate the two. This allows the paved areas to be multi-functional and serve as special event/festival/food truck/etc. plaza space. Other collaborative efforts resulted in reshaped parking that integrated detention, heat-island effect reduction, and additional park planting. Some projects have had long-term success such as this one that was planted several years back.
