I know this first hand because when the after effects of my job sent me to the hospital, I came out with a renewed focus to ensure that I was a Dad. And that couldn't happen if my job was making me so sick that there was a chance I couldn't be around, because being a Dad is all about presence first and foremost. But that doesn't mean that we don't have our own selfish professional ambitions, desires, and things we want to achieve for the sake of happiness. It took me a while to find the right path for me, and while every path is different, I along with my co-host Sonita Reese are here to tell you your path DOES exist. One of the clinical trials currently operating within LHCH is Atrial Fibrillation Big Picture (AFBP). The trial is investigating the causes of Post-operative Atrial Fibrillation (POAF) after CABG/MVR/AVR – which affects around 40% of patients. AF is one of the most common abnormal heart rhythms and can lead to adverse health outcomes such as strokes. AF in any case is both mentally and physically exhausting for the patient, particularly after cardiac surgery. On top of this, POAF can lead to increased time in hospital and relative socioeconomic burdens – which ever way you look at AF – more work needs to be done! There have been many advances in surgical care and medical innovation, yet some complications such as POAF continue to persist. Despite this, the risk factors and mechanisms of POAF are still poorly understood. So, the clinical trial AFBP utilises blood tests before, during and after surgery to identify any AF related risk factors, with the aim of giving us a better understanding of what causes POAF. The aim is clear, use this extra information to paint a better picture of the pathogenesis of POAF, with the potential to improve treatment. Incorporating research into cardiac surgery is no easy task, yet thanks to the positive attitudes of the teams at LHCH we have now recruited over 100 patients, a fantastic achievement. This valuable research would not be possible without the support from the amazing cardiac and aortic surgery teams at LHCH, a few of which are pictured below, many thanks to you all. 💥📣Maternal and infant morbidity and mortality is a pressing public health crisis and should be treated as such ⚠️🏥 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released reports determining that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are PREVENTABLE. The JAMA, Journal of the American Medical Association released a study last year showing that maternal deaths across the US more than doubled over the course of two decades, with Black mothers dying at rates 3 to 4x higher than white women. We’ve all come from mothers; we’ve all been born. Many of us are mothers or will be one day. Indeed, we’ve all loved someone who has or is getting ready to give birth. The act of labor itself is arguably one of the most traumatic events the human body can possibly undergo. So why is this endemic scarcely known, acknowledged, or discussed? What is being done to address this? Why are women dying to have a baby in 2024, where technological advancements are at an all-time high, in a country with the largest GDP and the highest healthcare expenditure in the world? Our mission at Mother Goose Health is to proactively address rising risk factors, gaps in care, and health-related social needs with a human touch supported by technology. The intersection of medicine & tech profoundly improves healthcare delivery and patient outcomes, and we have the data to support it. BIG things are in the works as we deploy partnerships with physician practices and healthcare systems nationwide.
