Matt, Program Manager at AIS.  “As early as I can remember, I wanted to be a pilot and the military seemed like the most direct way to do that and have a lot of fun along the way. Many of my family members served before me and hearing their stories, seeing the bonds they formed and experiencing their love of our country motivated me to follow the same path while pursuing my dream. During my time in the Army, I led numerous teams of different sizes, skills and responsibilities. Learning to lead and adapt, along with learning from a wide variety of good (and not so good) leaders has been incredibly valuable when transitioning from the Army to working at AIS. One of my bigger fears on my way out of the Army was leaving behind a massive organization and support structure where we all had shared experiences, a foundation of trust and incredibly close relationships. I can say that the team I work with at AIS is outstanding and I love working with them every day. The people at AIS helped more than anything else with my transition from the Army to a civilian career.” 💡 Matt’s advice to fellow Veterans seeking a successful career in the civilian workforce: Don’t be afraid to change your career path or field. The skills you learned and experiences you gained are far more widely applicable than they seem at the time. 

It's fabulous Friday, and we end the week with another #dodskillbridge turned full-time #Veteran spotlight, highlighting Conor Pryor! Conor began his initial #skillbridge with us last December after serving 9 years in the US Navy. He has been an amazing success story of already being #promoted at Cushman & Wakefield His determination, ambition, and willingness to learn and take on more has continued his efforts to #makeanimpact in all that he does. Let's give it up for #skilledtrades opportunities and a phenomenal leadership team to include Fatime McKeon, Scott Severs, and Ryan McGann that has supported Conor to reach his potential. Read below to learn some inspiring responses from Conor! 1. What interested you in accepting an opportunity with Cushman & Wakefield/ C&W Services? Accepting an opportunity with C&W was a very easy decision. The #professionalism , #inclusion , and #support I got while I was in the #skillbridge program was un-parallel. From the recruitment phase to position acceptance, the members involved truly cared and were there every step on my journey. #Transitioning out of the #military is a major life event. My transition was made easier by the #team members at C&W. 2. What #skillsets and #experiences from the #military helped you transition into your new role? My military career was with the #Navy’s #Construction Battalions. Known better as the #Seabees, we are a major construction force that supports all military operations. My job #skills learned directly translate to my position now. I am still learning the finer points of the differences between military and civilian, but thankfully the core skills learned in the military translate very well. 3. What do you enjoy most about your position, team, and working for Cushman & Wakefield/ C&W Services? I enjoy the #challenges my position brings; I must always be one step ahead of potential problems that could arise from any situation. I am very lucky to have a diverse, talented, and caring #team around me. My staff is beyond professional and truly strive to make this a great work environment. 4. What advice or suggestions would you give to other #transitioningservicemembers and #veterans? I would give the same advice that was given to me, when I started the #skillbridge position; “Be a sponge” try to absorb as much as you can and if anything, always, always, always ask questions. There are a lot of nuances from military to civilian work life, for any case not covered, never be afraid to ask questions. Today I started the the Command and General Staff Officers' Course (#CGSOC). It is the next step on my professional journey as a #USArmy Officer. But wait...doesn't she work for Amazon? Yes, I am a civilian employed full-time by #Amazon, but I am also in the U.S. Army Reserves (#USAR). After nearly five years on TPU status (i.e. the "weekend warrior" status), I transitioned back into the IRR (i.e. the "my name's on a list" status) this month. Not many people know that you can continue to pursue your military career from the IRR including military schooling and promotions. (#protip) So, today is my official "start" date for CGSOC (also known as "Intermediate Level Education" or "ILE" for short.) This enables me to maximize work-life balance as I continue to work full-time for Amazon, raise a beautiful 18 mo old toddler, and figure out life as a military spouse (again). But why do I need to do CGSOC/ILE if I am in the IRR? It keeps me on track towards promotion to Lieutenant Colonel! (Which I can promote to from the IRR!) I can also continue to accrue points from the IRR and have "good years" which contribute towards retirement after "20 good years." For those unfamiliar with CGSOC/ILE: it is an academic and leadership program consisting of two primary phases: Phase 1 (Common Core Course) and Phase 2 (the Advanced Operations Course) which is the credentialing course for field grade officers in the operational Army. The course is intended to yields adaptive, self-aware, field-grade leaders of character and competence who are capable of shaping the joint operational environment. THE VETERAN IMPACT EQUATION I speak to Veterans about three critical areas of profound introspection and progress evaluation. Veteran employment of all types is crucial to the 🇺🇸 economy and it's a major factor in their life success. Officers, NCOs, and enlisted personnel face dilemmas during career progression. THE TRANSITION (Immediate): Selecting their industry, their value, their expectations of them as civilians, and their long-term identity and aspirations. THE REALIZATION (2-3 years): This seems to be the hardest part. I am meant for this industry. We value each other. I can meet my life goals in the industry. I have the patience to meet expectations and advance. I find meaning in the work. THE ADVANCEMENT (3 - 50 years): I can provide meaning to others in my industry. My experience matters, and I showcase it within industry forums and groups. People need me to lead them. I can continuously improve and learn. I know how to provide fair profit and mentorship within my organization. I can meet and exceed my life goals. But, I find that Veterans need THESE three attributes for a fulfilled life. 1. Purpose and meaning: My life’s work is important to me, and it helps me advance society. 2. Promise & hope for impact; I won't plateau. My God-given skills, combined with grit and courage, will increase my impact on the industry. 3. Happiness and connection; people die as lonely millionaires. Hopes die without shared connection and partnership. Happiness is never about judging yourself by what others have vs what you have (read that again) - this only spirals. Happiness is the wisdom you can provide to the three generations (four for centurions) you impart. Getting this Veteran equation balanced is vital to a healthy life. One that brings family and friends along for the ride. To my Veteran friends, study your equation above. Becoming an impactful member of society takes skill, courage, and patience. I believe you will get there.
