What a legend! In competitive swimming, there are not many harder events than the 200m butterfly. Our local hero Jess Schipper was world record holder and won several gold medals at the #Olympic Games and the World Championships between 2004 and 2009. https://lnkd.in/g6TdETd4 A story of huge #dedication, #perseverance, and #courage Today Jess helped fix my son's #swimmers at the #Queensland State Championships. Wardrobe malfunction! I'm so grateful to Jess. A story of #humility, #care, and #kindness. I don't normally post much, but felt compelled by a touch of Jess's kindness and a reflection of how the people around us make us feel. With a world full of turmoil and change, we need more people to demonstrate these characteristics. Next year will bring much more change than previous years. We need to look after the people in our circles. 1. #Care and kindness for others, particularly people who may not be as fortunate or maybe passing through rough waters. 2. #Courage to speak up for human rights. 3. #Humility to get your hands dirty to make the good things happen. 4. #Dedication and #perseverance to continue doing the small things even when times get tough. In our workshops, we teach that repetition is the mother of mastery. No one exemplifies this more than Katie Ledecky. Her dominance in swimming isn't just about raw talent; it's about countless hours of repetition. Stroke after stroke, lap after lap, year after year. According to The New York Times, it's estimated that Ledecky swims about 37 miles a week. "That adds up to 1,900 miles a year, and it means eons of staring at the black line that runs along the bottom of a pool." The result? Ledecky now has won 14 Olympic medals, nine of them gold, beating her own record for the most medals won by an American woman in Olympic history. She has 23 of the top 25 times in the 800-meter freestyle and 24 of the top 25 times in the 1,500. The Olympic medal count system can be seen as #insane and #unfair due to several reasons. Firstly, it doesn't account for the varying levels of difficulty and competitiveness across different sports. For instance, #swimming and #gymnastics have numerous events, offering more medal opportunities, while sports like #rugby and #baseball have very few. This disparity can unfairly skew the medal tally in favor of countries excelling in sports with multiple events. Additionally, sports like #athletics and #football, with higher global participation, often see stiffer competition, making medals harder to come by compared to niche sports like #equestrian. The system also fails to recognize the individual brilliance required in sports with fewer events, like marathon running. Furthermore, team sports like basketball contribute only a single medal despite the collective effort involved. The medal count also overlooks the different investment levels and resources available to athletes from various countries. This week, both Swimming Australia and USA Swimming will begin holding their respective Olympic Trials for the upcoming Olympic Games. Last summer at the World Championships, the Australians pulled off a stunner by earning more gold medals than the Americans (13 to 7). However, the Australians have not topped a medal table at the Olympic Games since 1956 in Melbourne. The Americans have a long track record of performing well in Olympic years. The US Olympic roster will likely feature athletes who are current NCAA athletes or just wrapped up their eligibility this March. For the US veterans that end up making the team, nearly all of them still train on college campuses. With college athletics going through a total shift, my opinion is that schools are the most marketable when they are successful in multiple areas. Athletic Departments should celebrate their Olympic Gold Medalists as much as they celebrate football and basketball accomplishments. WBB certainly has proven that investing in the talent can pay off. The NCAA swimming and diving system develops many Olympic medal contenders, for both the United States and the rest of the world.
