England’s dramatic extra-time win against Slovakia in the last 16 round of Euro 2024 saw a peak audience of 18.4m tune into ITV's coverage across ITV1 and ITVX. The figure was the highest TV audience on any channel in the UK in the last 18 months and ITV’s biggest since the Qatar 2022 World Cup, with the average for the game itself scoring 15.4m viewers and 66% of the available TV audience at the time. Nothing breeds a following quite like success "The BBC has reported its latest coverage of the England’s semi-final match against Australia during the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ had A peak TV audience of 7.3 million views on its linear channel...The football game was also streamed 3.8 million times on the video-on demand platform BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport Online. While match highlights and clips of the game were streamed 2.7 million times across the broadcaster’s digital platforms." The record is likely to be surpassed at the weekend with the final between England and Spain, and I'm sure it will do amazing things for women's football and women's sport in general. In England, interest in Women's Football peaked last year with the win in the Euro 2022, with the Lioness' received multiple mentions including from MPs in the British Parliament. It will mean more money for #broadcast and viewing rights, which will increase the visibility, and therefore interest further. WOW! As someone who’s a huge sports fan but never really watched darts, I was blown away by the final of the Professional Darts Corporation World Darts Championship this week. Even my wife and 11 year daughter were completely hooked, and they were learning the rules as first time watchers! It seems we weren’t alone, the British nation was gripped by darts fever - with Sky Media UK posting some incredible viewing stats for the final on Wednesday night. The underdog journey of 16 year old wonderkid Luke Littler all the way to the final stole the nations hearts and shone a spotlight on a standout event showcasing the allure of niche sports. Not only did it exhibit remarkable skill by Littler and the eventual champion Luke Humphries, but it underlined the potential of niche sports to captivate diverse audiences. Women’s football scored big on the small screen UK viewing figures for the Women’s World Cup final smashed records last Sunday, with pundits predicting the game could spark a sponsorship windfall for the sport. The England v Spain showdown hit a combined peak of 14.8m viewers across the BBC and ITV, setting a record for a Women’s World Cup final. Average viewing figures of 13.3m marked a UK record for any women’s match. In Spain, 7.4m watched, the country’s highest-ever audience for a women’s fixture. A reported 56 per cent of viewers were male. Research revealed earlier this year how viewing time for women’s sport increased across the board by 131 per cent in 2022. Laura Weston, trustee of the Women’s Sport Trust, which carried out the research, told Positive News that the record World Cup audiences could “supercharge” the English Women’s league by attracting bigger sponsors. #marlinselection #positivenews #goodnews #businessnews #newsupdate
