Not one but two! Spires has been nominated for both Technology Tool and Tuition Partner of the year at the 2024 National Tutoring Awards! Although every single feature of Spires Marketplace has been designed to benefit tutors, their main need is a sustainable and scalable source of clients. We provide this through the opportunity to work with thousands of students all over the world. Due to the quality of both our tutors and technology, Spires had over 30,000 requests from students last year, 45% of them from outside the UK. Our 1000 tutors worked with 9000 students in 120 countries and the platform then takes care of everything so that they can focus on what they do best; teach. In turn, Spires solves the educational needs of students by providing highly-qualified and vetted tutors at a price that suits their budget. Spires is quick, easy and removes physical barriers to finding the best tutors. According to our 2023 survey, 81% of our students improved their grades and the average rating of 100,000+ classes was 4.97/5. This is why we have been recognised at the national tutoring awards. A huge congratulations to all of our staff and tutors on helping us on this journey.

Thought-provoking post! The idea that edtech should not just support but transform the educational framework is essential as we consider the future of learning. In an era defined by rapid technological advances, perhaps it’s time to rethink the concept of 'school.' Instead of a physical space, we might view it as a lifelong journey, enhanced by AI, where critical thinking and adaptability are at the forefront. This shift could redefine how we approach education, making it more personalized, accessible, and aligned with the continuous learning needs of today's society.
Steve Jobs said, “People who are serious about software should make their own hardware” I say people who are serious about edtech should make their own schools. 99% of the edtech market today is life support for the traditional school system--it's just moving outdated practices and paperwork to the internet. Extremely uninspired. If you want to truly leverage the power of software to transform students' lives, you need your own school.

The Edtech Ninja - Education Technology Business Consultant * Website Project Manager at Let's Go Live Science
"#Edtech companies should listen to teachers more!" Well yes....but... Teacher 1 says "You must add new functionality X as it is essential for this to work in schools." Teacher 2 says "Why on earth did you add functionality X? It makes no sense for schools to have this." Teacher 3 says "You MUST add functionality Y or this product breaks all the rules for our statutory testing." Teacher 4 says "Why did you add functionality Y in this way? That's not what we are supposed to do at all!" Teacher 5 says "Why did you add functionality X and functionality Y? Now it's all too complicated and I cannot use it at all!" All. The. Time. This is what edtech companies hear day in and day out! The functionality which will make one school buy the product is the same functionality that another school will say is their nightmare and they don't want it now. Schools are not all the same. Even their interpretation of the same DfE guidance can vary depending on which LA they are in or which MAT they belong to or which training course they went on. (Which says way more about DfE guidance, often released on a Friday night, than it does about schools and their time to interpret 70-page documents in their spare time tbh!) If you are trying to sell to schools and you feel like you are stuck between a rock and a hard place...it's because you are! But that should never stop you trying. Because there are enough schools and teachers (and parents and students!) out there for you to make a decent living by being the right tool for some of them. Keep listening to schools and teachers. But then listen to more. Don't just listen to your happy customers. Listen to your harshest critics too. The happy medium lies somewhere within! I help many companies to block out the noise and focus on that which sits well with the path they are on. No-one can teach you to be the perfect match for every school/college/nursery in the land. No-one should promise that either. But you can get help to make a scaleable and sensible product development plan together.
