Mortenson first met with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2009 when Rays executives toured Target Field. After seven years of close collaboration, the Rays officially hired Mortenson to build a new ballpark in St. Petersburg. The $1.3 billion project, pending city approval in mid-July, includes a stadium and 86-acre mixed-use development at the former Gas Plant site. The Rays will contribute $700 million, with the remainder from St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. The development, by Hines, will feature 5,000 homes, retail, and entertainment spaces. The new ballpark, designed by Populous, will seat 30,000 and feature a cost-effective rectilinear design. If the project is approved, Mortenson has a team ready in the St. Petersburg/Tampa area, collaborating with local firms Beck, Envision, and Arenda Collective.
