One quick way to be more inclusive in your organisation is to remove acronyms as far as possible. Acronyms are a code. You can only gain full access to the information if you know the code. In education one common challenge is understanding NFA. What does this mean? No further action or no fixed abode. One needs serious and immediate attention, one doesn't. Every organisation will have acronyms and they work well to shorten documents and keep conversations moving. The problem with them is that: - They can be misunderstood - They are often unique to that organisation and so not experienced anywhere else - They can rely on someone telling you what they mean - The above can then put the onus on a new or inexperienced person having to ask questions which might make them feel stupid or inept- not a good outcome. If we want to use acronyms, we recommend we always explain what the acronym means, or that we challenge people to explain (especially if we are experienced, it helps those who aren't). Try to do this automatically, and that will help people to be included in the organisation and in the work you are doing. #equitydiversityinclusion #arts #artsandculture #leadership #inclusionleadership #inclusionmatters #theatre #dance #music #diversity #hr #training #education #onlinetraining #learning #inclusion #equity #development

In our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultancy, the idea of language comes up regularly. It might be people telling us they don’t know what to say - what words to use to describe people without causing offense. It might be teams of people discussing what words to use to accurately convey their thoughts and values regarding EDI issues. It might even be how to handle specific texts on stage or in the curriculum - what words do we give staff to use in lessons or in programmes to convey unpleasant and harmful ideas and words. What words do we use to avoid offence? What words do we use to make it clear that these ideas don’t belong to us, but are in this text or play? Words. Meaning. Feelings. All are connected. How might you reflect on the words and terminology you use? If you think your organisation has some way to go with the language used in your policies, strategies or any other areas, get in touch today. https://buff.ly/44TEqT1 #equitydiversityinclusion #arts #artsandculture #leadership #inclusionleadership #inclusionmatters #theatre #dance #music #diversity #hr #training #education #onlinetraining #learning #inclusion #equity #development

We have been working to ensure our practice is as inclusive as possible. Just a few things we do to support people who are neurodiverse: 1. Buff coloured background on all slides 2. Simple font sans serif for clarity 3. Delivering information in a range of ways- on the board, verbally and via discussion 4. Processing breaks and pauses 5. Setting it up so people know they can leave the room and move as they wish - no restrictions 6. Asking people to bring something to write on and with so they can doodle 7. Structured breaks and check ins 8. Slides aren't over crowed 9. Images represent what the content is about and are fuss free If you need further support on how you can support your neurodiverse colleagues, please get in contact today https://buff.ly/4bST7tk #equitydiversityinclusion #arts #artsandculture #leadership #inclusionleadership #inclusionmatters #theatre #dance #music #diversity #hr #training #education #onlinetraining #learning #inclusion #equity #development

Why is microaggressions training so important? - It's so important that people know what a microaggression is, so they can avoid delivering one unintentionally, and so that you can recognise one when it is delivered to you or someone else. - In the moment of being dealt a microaggression, it can be difficult to know how to respond. This is why we are running our Understanding Microaggressions workshop on 26th June from 10.30am - 12pm. We love this testimonial so much. Join us on 26th June from 10.30am - 1pm where we will be hosting a virtual workshop to learn about, explore and better understand what microaggressions are and how they can show up for people. We will cover: - What microaggressions are and how they are constructed - Confronting stereotypes and prejudice which lead to microaggressions - Practical exploration of examples of microaggressions - Gaslighting and how to avoid gaslighting people who raise concerns - Q&A "Spotlight Inclusion hosted a brilliant workshop and in-depth training session around microaggressions. It helped our organisation review the current processes and begin to talk about uncomfortable truths to journey forward in our collective understanding. It created a positive shift in staffs outlook when approaching situations both as a receiver or observer of an aggression. The value it brought to me was being able to reference elements learnt from the training to empower me to navigate my ownership over my protected characteristic. I am extremely grateful for the support and time Spotlight Inclusion provided, both professionally and personally - huge thank you." #CultureMakes 🧑🤝🧑 Society Our Albion Series is an exploration of England and our society in all its complexities. Through this exploration, we’ve journeyed across the country with our ‘Speech! Speech!’ and ‘Speak Out!’ projects, teaching people how to write persuasive speeches and giving them the confidence to speak out and be heard. Throughout our workshops, we’ve seen participants… 📣 Increase Their Confidence 67% of participants reported gaining more confidence in their public speaking and writing skills. 🤩 Gain a Positive Impact on How They Feel Participants described the workshops as “enjoyable,” “friendly,” “positive,” and “enlightening,” while also expressing that they “learned a lot.” 💼 Develop New Skills In addition to improving their writing and public speaking, participants noted that our workshops enhanced their articulation, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. ⚡ Acquire Skills to Help Their Future Many participants felt that the workshop would positively affect their future activities, making them more confident and active in public speaking and political engagement. 📰 Become More Politically Engaged After the workshop, participants felt more enthusiastic and assured about engaging in political activities. We’re extremely proud of the impact these projects have had. Without audiences, Shakespeare would have been “just” a poet, and conversational iambic pentameter would not have yielded thousands of new English words and phrases still used today. Or, as we used to say at The Late Seating at Actors, art is use it or lose it, so let’s use it and support local artists. Performing arts do not exist without audiences. Audiences have been in decline for decades. That means performing arts leaders and boards are making hard choices. When those choices are purpose-driven business decisions that are mindful of what audiences want, we can create sustainable arts business models.
