Every career journey is shaped by pivotal moments - the first job, team, salary, and promotion. Yet, it's the first mentor who sets the tone, determining whether one builds a fulfilling career or simply exists. As a PARCONIAN since my father's tenure in 1999, I longed to experience the professional allure of one of Pakistan's premier refineries. When I secured an internship after a rigorous selection process, I knew it was my chance to immerse myself in the dynamic environment of PARCO - Pak-Arab Refinery Limited's marketing department. During my internship, surrounded by esteemed mentors, I savored the opportunity to learn and explore. Seniors played a pivotal role in boosting our morale, but one individual stood out - Mr. Munawwar Ahmed, the Marketing Manager at PARCO - Pak-Arab Refinery Limited in 2011. Mr. Ahmed's unwavering support and belief in my potential ignited a newfound confidence within me. His guidance not only encouraged me to exceed my perceived limits but also instilled in me the belief that exceptional achievements were within my reach. Guiding others is a noble gesture, but being a responsible and sincere mentor is transformative. As the adage goes, "you rise by lifting others." Hello everyone, This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2024! To celebrate this, I recently spoke to Finley an intern on the ClwydAlyn Project Search programme. For his Second Rotation Finley has been working as a Kitchen Assistant in local Care Home. Please read below to hear about his experiences on his rotation..... Hi my name is Finley, for my Second rotation I have been working as a Kitchen Assistant in a Local Care Home. My day to day tasks include: Cleaning surfaces, laying the tables and serving the puddings to the residents and folding the napkins. I also put out the sauces, Load and unload the dishwasher, preparing the vegetables, helping to make the sandwiches and grating the cheese. Making sure the kitchen is tidy by putting things away, helping to clean the fridge and putting the food away in the fridge. What things have you found difficult on your rotation? I have found it difficult to learn how to move things safely I now a trolley to help me. I also found folding the napkins quite tricky as its quite fiddly so I asked for help with this. Setting the tables up quickly has also been hard. What skills have you learnt on your rotation? I have learnt about Customer Services and Product presentation and improved my skills in both of these areas. My listening skills have gotten better by listening to the staff and residents. I have also improved my peeling skills. What have you been doing on Project Search this term? Recently I attended a reverse Jobs fair and met with employers and talked about my skills and experience. I have completed my Food Hygiene Level 2 and a first Aid awareness course. We have done some classroom work on Health and Safety and done a bit of interview practise. For my rotation I had an interview which we prepared for by going through the questions before hand this made me feel prepared. Well done Finley you are doing amazing on your rotation! Celebrating National Reconciliation Week, we honour the invaluable contributions of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues, suppliers, and community partners. Where Would be the ideal place to Conduct Your Internship or Protégé Programs as Undergraduates or Graduates ?  (1) Some prefer to do it nearby their hometowns instead for economic reasons particularly.  (2) Some prefer to do it at any of Big Corporations out of town far away from their hometowns for the sake of relevancy with their disciplines of study. But they have to bear the expenses incurred.  (3) Some don't care as long as they get that placement.  (4) Some from Sabah Sarawak even are willing to conduct their Internship or Protégé Programs at KL.  (5) My advices : (5.1) Prepare your budgets, determination, courage to conduct your Internship or Protege Programs at any of Big Corporations related to your disciplines of study.  (5.2) Broaden your network at those Big Corporations with any of Senior Professionals, Hiring Managers, Recruiters, Top Guns. Avoid being lone wolves, anti social, silo mentality, extreme introverts.  (5.3) Learn the hard way, sacrifice, dirty your hands for relevant hands on working experiences as Intern or Protégé.  (5.4) Obtain testimonials from your Supervisors there as part of your collaterals.  (5.5) Maintain your network with staff there, don't ever burn the bridge.

I recently left UNHCR after nearly 13 truly fulfilling years. I was moved by the fact a number of former interns attended my leaving event and this has prompted my reflection today. When I joined UNHCR in 2011 with the brief to build a goodwill ambassador programme, the first thing I did was hire an intern. Ever since, interns have been a crucial part of the team and wider programme. They're not here to pick up the tasks no one else wants - they are important members of our team. In hiring interns, we are providing valuable learning and development opportunities to young people starting out on their careers and looking for that first critical experience. But we benefited massively too- internships are a wonderful way to draw new talent, fresh perspectives and energy into our teams. To shake things up a bit and open us up to new things. Many of ours have gone on to build successful careers in the UN or NGO sector. Others have gone into the media, government, academia or law. All of them are making a difference.  It's not glib to say these are the leaders of the future - they are. I am so proud of the interns who worked in my team and I really encourage every team leader to consider how they too can benefit from internships. To the interns I had the privilege to work with: Thank you, and I'd love to invite you to share in 1 or 2 words in the comments on the job you are doing now, in the hope this will inspire other young people to apply for internships at UNHCR or elsewhere, and equally inspire team leaders to create more (and more meaningful) internship opportunities.
