Continued…. Child develops a sense of recognition, recognition in terms of recognizing faces of the people around her/him, recognizing voices of those people, recognizing other environmental sounds around her/him. In respond to this sounds, voices and faces s/he not only quietens her/his activity, stops crying if s/he is crying but also s/he gives reply with her/his smile or by vocalizing directly. This is how a child learns to communicate and participates in conversation, eventually s/he gathers more and more information and which in turn helps her/him to develop her/his language. If a baby is not getting quiet or smiling or vocalizing even when you are talking to her/him that means you should get an alarm that there is something which is not “Okay” and you must consult your pediatrician or your audiologist and speech language pathologist. They are the professionals who can guide you and take you through what is considered to be normal or age-appropriate levels of reception and expression. And if your baby is lagging behind then how much behind and what are the things you should be doing now to bridge this gap. If a baby is not responding to a particular stimulation, for this situation there can be many more possibilities/reasons other than lack of hearing. Lack of sense of hearing is the most common cause of underdeveloped speech and language development. And hearing assessment is very easy and can be tested within 2-3 hours if using a complete test battery. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) refers to a range of methods used to support or replace spoken language for individuals who have difficulty communicating verbally. AAC can be used by people of all ages and with a variety of disabilities, including those with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and traumatic brain injuries. There are two main types of AAC: unaided and aided. Unaided AAC involves using body language, gestures, and facial expressions to communicate, while aided AAC involves using tools or devices to support communication. Examples of aided AAC include picture communication systems, speech generating devices, and computer-based communication systems. AAC can be a vital tool for individuals who have difficulty with verbal communication. It can help them express their wants and needs, participate in social interactions, and engage in academic or vocational activities. AAC can also help to reduce frustration, increase independence, and improve overall quality of life. It's important to note that AAC should always be customized to meet the unique needs of the individual user. A speech-language pathologist or other AAC specialist can help determine the most appropriate type of AAC for each individual and provide training and support for its use.

Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) are responsible for so much more than speech, they address a variety of communication challenges that can significantly impact for example, seniors’ daily lives. Some things they assist with is cognitive communication, helping seniors enhance memory, organization, and problem-solving skills, which are vital for effective communication and daily functioning. Additionally, improving communication skills allows seniors to engage more meaningfully in social settings, fostering connections that are essential for emotional well-being. SLPs also play a crucial role in addressing swallowing difficulties and enhancing voice clarity, both of which are important for overall health and quality of life. They provide personalized strategies that can help seniors to navigate their specific challenges, making communication easier and more effective. #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathology https://lnkd.in/ePpvmTaj

Founder| Speech Language Pathologist| Course Creator: Autism Deep Dive & Comprehensive Sensory Motor Intervention (COSMI)
In the context of neurodiversity affirming practices in speech language pathology, it’s concerning to see a trend where some therapists prematurely conclude that a child with autism has reached their limit in language acquisition, labeling it as an unchangeable aspect of their neurodiversity. However, isn’t our role as Speech Language Pathologists to empower these children to express themselves, advocate for their needs, and navigate life’s complexities with confidence? Embracing neurodiversity means recognizing and celebrating each child’s unique strengths and interests, but it should also involve pushing boundaries—gently challenging them while following their lead. This balance between support and challenge is the essence of effective speech and language interventions. It’s not about settling for limitations but about fostering growth in a way that is both respectful and ambitious. After all, our goal is to help every child find their voice in a world that often speaks a different language. #speechtherapy #speechtherapymemes #speechpathology #slp #slplife #slp2be #speechtherapist #speechtherapist #speechpathologist

Beyond honored that I was able to present to Procore Technologies caregiver team yesterday. As part of their extensive inclusion efforts, their team of caregivers invited me to come speak about Fostering Connection Through Communication. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, there are many things I just know or take for granted, but as a parent and caregiver there is a lot of misinformation or no information out there. It is easy to think you're not doing something right, something is wrong, or ignore something that might benefit from some speech strategies. In this presentation I discussed: 🗣️Typical language development 🗣️Bilingualism 🗣️Physical differences (such as tongue ties or clefts) 🗣️Brain Injuries 🗣️Neurodiversity 🗣️Speech Therapy 🗣️Cultural differences and how Speech disorders affect that 🗣️Gave tips, strategies and resources If your company has Employee Resources Groups and are looking for speakers to present, please reach out. We received very positive feedback from the attendees at yesterday's presentation.

💡 If you have a child who is not speaking much or not at all, you might wonder what you can say when choosing gestalts to model! The first thing to do is to observe and listen! We want to figure out what they are interested in and what they want to communicate about. Just because a child isn't using spoken language, it doesn't mean they don't have the language or the gestalts. The process of language starts in our minds before we move our bodies (e.g. for gestures) and our mouths (for speech sounds). When we model language, we want to keep our tone exciting, fun and natural! We have 'pinned' some tips and examples above! ☝️😊 It might also be worth considering using alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) to support your child's language. AAC won't replace language but support its development. If you have any questions about how to support your child's gestalt language development, please get in touch with a Speech Pathologist! 💚 The information in the above infographic and caption is adapted from Meaningful Speech. #gestalts #scripts #gestaltlanguagedevelopment #gestaltlanguageprocessing #gestaltlanguageprocessor #languagedevelopment #neurodiversity #neurodivergence #neurodiversityaffirmingpractice #neuroaffirmingpractice #leapfrogtherapy #leapfrogspot #occupationaltherapy #ot #speechpathology #speechlanguagepathology #speechtherapy #speechlanguagetherapy #slp #earlyintervention #earlydevelopment #clinic #sydneyclinic #melbourneclinic #strategies #tips
