How do you find your onboarding process? There's nothing quite like the buzz of new starters joining the team! We absolutely love the fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and new perspectives they bring! But let's be honest, the onboarding process can be a bit like planning a wedding. Time-consuming and meticulous. Not to mention what seems like an avalanche of emails 🏔️ Despite the time it takes, seeing our team grow is incredibly rewarding. Each new member is a breath of fresh air. This week has been very much about onboarding, for both me and my daughter. Here are 2 helpful lessons I've learned: ↓ 1) Onboarding is more about the newcomer's process of perceiving the world than about acquiring information. There are some who will want to have "all" the information before taking the first step. There are yet others who will be overwhelmed with too much information and need to start "getting their hands dirty" almost immediately. For others, connecting and bonding needs to happen before they start making sense of the new process. And the list goes on. 2) Patience and adjusting to the newcomer's process actually speeds up the onboarding. So if you're looking to welcome someone into your team in the near future, I suggest you start here: 1) Ask yourself: what is crucial for me to achieve with this process? Is it to start building trust, create the relationship or is it something else? 1) Ask the newcomer: What have you found most helpful in your previous on-boarding processes? What do you need from us in this process? While many might be "bummed" at the idea of slowing things down, in my experience the slower the start, the faster the progress.
