Leaving the Police: Walk the Walk It's Week 3 of the current Mightify Career Change cohort, with our group of highly skilled police officers well into the process and making more connections and finding new opportunities every day. This week the focus moves onto the more technical and tangible aspects - interpreting job adverts, tailoring effective responses to them, honing CVs and applications and proactively translating skills and experience. Not to mention the continued motivation and peer support the group are giving each other daily, which helps accelerate and smooth out a transition that can be an emotional rollercoaster. All part of the job! Actually I don’t consider it work since I 😍 what I do! Part of what I do is is helping people “Navigate Federal Employment”. With that comes A LOT of questions. What’s all those number even really mean? What do you mean by “series”? Exactly is the grading criteria for these jobs I want to apply for? How do they determine the difference between a GS-12, GS-13, and GS-14 when advertised that way? The job ad doesn’t tell me a whole lot!! Where else can I find some key words and phrases to better highlight my knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role?! 🔥🔥 There’s List of series and functional guides. South Carolina’s Second Chance initiative not only helps create a pathway to employment for returning citizens, it provides employers with a larger pool of skilled workers, as well as hiring incentives, making for a more robust workforce. An Spencer M. is just one of our many Second Chance success stories. Spencer was receiving unemployment benefits and faced barriers, including an extensive gap in employment, an outdated résumé, lack of interviewing skills, no transportation, and a judicial record. Despite these challenges, he remained persistent, actively seeking employment. He worked with his local SC Works center to obtain help finding a job, including participating in workshops and mock interviews, working with staff to apply for jobs, and receiving guidance and clothing assistance when he ultimately did secure an interview. Through his eagerness to work and determination to overcome barriers, Spencer was ultimately hired for a position earning more than $15 per hour, securing employment for himself and a new employee for the hiring company. I started the week sharing an interest profiler that helped you look at your top 3 work personalities for your career. You should have seen some potential careers based on your responses. Thanks for all the comments and views. Today, let’s dip into skills! Many people struggle with identifying their top skills for positions they are seeking. Skills can be divided into 4 groups; and these 4 groups meld together for many jobs and duties. ✅Hard Skills- gained from education, work related training, certifications and hands-on/on-the-job training ✅Soft Skills- interpersonal and emotional intelligence. Think everything you learned in kindergarten! Be kind, listen first, have empathy. ✅Transferable Skills- specific combination of soft and hard skills that you have and you will use in your next position. Customer Service, Administration, Medical coding. ✅Marketable Skills- the money-making skills! These are listed on the job posting in specific areas such as qualifications, requirements or most recently I have seen “Who you are” taking a job title and describing all the different skills from above. ***you have these skills, now the employer has a money value attached in the salary piece.
