I am sick and tired of all the rape, gender based violence, sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination around me! ❓Aren't there safe spaces for men to express their frustrations and to be sensitized? ❓Why are the number of male allies so less when they make up the maximum gender representation in the country? ❓Why do we all pull each other down when it makes better sense to stand together as a community to create safe spaces? 🇮🇳 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲, 𝐖𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 💪 🇮🇳 📢 SStraight Circles Foundation has embarked on "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧 (𝐓𝐊𝐂)" to eradicate Gender based Violence, Bullying, Discrimination and Harassment in Educational Institutions, Workplaces and Communities. Gender Based Violence I just completed my course on confronting and countering gender based violence and this is some of the things I learnt . Gender-based violence refers to harmful actions that are directed at an individual based on their gender. It encompasses physical, sexual, emotional, or psychological harm inflicted on a person because of their gender identity. Gender based violence can occur as a result of different underlying causes like stereotype ,in effective legislature body and many more but I’ll be focusing on stereotypes in this write up As a girl who grew up in an African household I grew up hearing things like "you are girl you are not supposed to sit like that " But he is a boy so he can sit like that "As a man you are not supposed to cry “ But a woman can cry cause she is fragile As a lady this as a man that and for some reason it felt normal This stereotypes have allowed for unwanted behaviors. Using stereotypes to avoid the right thing to be done .For instance you would hear why did she wear what she wore ,she led him on,he is just a boy men will always be men but no men will not always be men Two major things that stood out for me in this course - [x] there is a difference between a stereotype and the right thing . And the right thing should always be done not cause it’s the norm or it is accepted but cause it is the right thing to be done - [x] And anybody can be a victim of gender based violence regardless of gender,age , class ,status ,religion or ethnicity . Gender based violence can be curbed and managed through various ways like educating young girls and boys , educating family members ,friends and correcting jokes that are insensitive . I’m grateful for Amnesty for this opportunity to participate in this course and I do not take it for granted . #genderbasedviolence #Amnestyinternational

Today is LGBTQIA+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day #SeenAndBelieved The right to live a life free from violence and abuse is a person’s most basic human right, but for many LGBTQIA+ people, this is not a reality. 1 in 2 LGBTQIA+ people will experience domestic, family and intimate partner violence & abuse in their lifetime, yet victims remain largely invisible with incredibly low levels of reporting. We believe it is vital that LGBTIQA+ people have equal access to support services. This doesn’t just mean access to specialised services run by community, but also advocating for mainstream providers to be educated in the unique experiences of domestic, family & sexual violence experienced by LGBTIQA+ communities. Sexual Assault Awareness Month (#SAAM) calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every person in the community. Systems of oppression such as racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, etc. contribute to higher rates of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. Unfortunately, those same groups are also the most impacted by inequitable systems of oppression in our society, and statistics show: More than 1 in 4 non-Hispanic Black women (29%) in the United States were raped in their lifetime (Basile et al., 2022). More than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native women (84.3%) have experienced violence in their lifetime (Rosay, 2016). 1 in 3 Hispanic women (34.8%) reported unwanted sexual contact in their lifetime (Basile et al., 2022). 9% of adults with intellectual disabilities have experienced sexual violence (Tomsa et al., 2021). 47% of all transgender people have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives (James et al., 2016). 💖 Today is #PinkShirtDay, also known as Anti-Bullying Day. Consider wearing pink today to support combating all forms of bullying in schools, workplaces, at home and online. Statistics Canada shared that sexually and gender diverse youth have been the target of bullying in the previous year—increasing to 77%, a higher percentage than that of cisgender youth who are attracted exclusively to a different gender (69%). We remain committed to combating all forms of hate, and continue working towards a future where girls, women and gender diverse individuals can thrive. Sexual harassment is sometimes minimised or framed as less harmful than other forms of violence. This false and harmful notion contributes to normalising violence and gender inequality. While harassment is widespread, we can prevent these ‘everyday’ forms of violence by challenging gender inequality. SHARE TO SAVE OTHERS! The danger is not always outside. Victim: My name is Sara, and I grew up in a small town. When I was eight years old my uncle started abusing me. It began with inappropriate touches and gradually escalated to more severe abuse. I was confused, scared, and ashamed. He threatened me, saying that no one would believe me if I told anyone. For years, I kept silent. I was afraid of the consequences & didn't want to bring shame to my family. But the pain and trauma were unbearable. I felt trapped in a prison of fear and silence. One day, when I was thirteen, I couldn't take it anymore. I confided in my school counselor, who noticed something was wrong. She was kind and understanding, and she assured me that what happened was not my fault. With her support, I found the courage to tell my parents. It was incredibly difficult for them to hear, but they stood by me. My uncle was arrested and brought to justice. It wasn't an easy journey, but it was the beginning of my healing process. Now, I am an advocate for child sexual abuse awareness in Pakistan. I share my story to let other survivors know that they are not alone and to encourage them to speak out. Sexual harassment in the workplace is a global issue which has recently received a lot of attention in the news. But what are possible measures to raise awareness and create accountability in your organisation?  In this series, we discuss the five thematic areas that are expected to be included in Gender Equality Plans for research & innovation organisations. Worrisome data for the LBGTIQ+ community across Europe. Here some detailed finding for my country the Netherlands: * 45% avoid holding hands with same-sex partner (for EU27 it is 53%) * 69% are fairly/very open about being LGBTIQ+ (51% for EU27). * 13% felt discriminated at work (19% for EU). * 53% were harassed in year before survey (54% in EU). 12% had been attacked in last 5 years (13% in EU) * 61% say violence against LGBTIQ+ people has increased (59% for EU)
