Some people in the field of behavioral health, especially addiction treatment, will spend more time telling you that others approach to helping is ineffective or wrong. They may even spend more energy doing that than helping people themselves, simply because it does not align with their methods or beliefs. I’m reminded of this F. Scott Fitzgerald quote, “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. Last month I was asked to do a presentation on addiction for the business community here in Whitehorse. There were about 50 attendees including the mayor, RCMP, and representatives from Health & Social Services. I did up a PowerPoint, despite my mediocre skills, and struggled with severe anxiety leading up to and during the presentation. Once it was done, things only got worse. My impostor syndrome (IS) was overwhelming and brutal, despite some positive feedback. Over the next couple of weeks, emails came in, as well as survey responses talking about how well my presentation was received, including the mayor. Still, my IS was relentless. I am not a doctor, nor a healthcare practitioner. And due to a lifetime of being told I was not good enough, the voice of my stepfather, I felt that I had no right to say the things I did in front of professionals in their field. Even though I have spent 8 years studying addiction and trauma, my IS tells me if I don't have an alphabet behind my name to qualify what I'm saying, I shouldn't be saying it. But I am managing better now. The same group requested that I create a video of the presentation so that they could share it with more people. I am not a YouTube pro or any better at video editing than I am at PP, but I'm going to share it with you, so be kind.
