Today I had the privilege of helping facilitate Behaven’s third European Roundtable, in partnership with the UK Science and Innovation Network.
This event brought together behaviour change and environmental experts, policymakers and civil society representatives, industry and business leaders to discuss the role of ecolabels across Europe in helping achieve a more sustainable future. Here are my key takeaways from the discussions...
👉🏽 Food ecolabels are symbols which indicate the environmental impact of food items.
What are some of the benefits of ecolabelling?
✅ Present complex environmental impact information in a summarised and salient manner
✅ Effective at influencing consumer choices towards sustainable options, reminding them about environmental issues at the point of purchase
✅ Provide a competitive advantage for businesses as consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable options they trust
✅ The demand for ecolabels has led to significant innovation, such as by manufacturers, for sustainable solutions
However, there are several challenges to the effective use of ecolabels:
1️⃣ In Europe alone there are over 231 types of ecolabels, with 58 related to food. This creates confusion for both businesses and consumers in navigating this “labelling jungle”.
2️⃣ There is still a lack of good quality data of the environmental impact of foods across the supply chain and little consensus on how to quantify the impact of specific products. This is vital to ensure accurate and transparent ecolabelling.
🤔 So, what should we do going forward?
> We need to move beyond just carbon emissions and integrate other issues, such as biodiversity loss, in creating meaningful ecolabels
> We must find a harmonised ecolabel system at an international level as simplicity is key
> We have to continue accumulating high-quality data and incentivising data collection is an important focus
> We should think broadly about how ecolabels interact with other important factors, such as animals welfare, human health and financial constraints
Thank you Julia Terlet for moderating such a meaningful discussion, and to all the speakers for their insights and contributions. This is a great first step towards a worldwide ecolabel solution!
