As leaders it is important that we regularly celebrate the successes of and express appreciation to our team members. If they regularly hear about their opportunities but rarely hear about their accomplishments they will not remain engaged and we will potentially lose great people.

One of the quickest ways to have folks become compliant with the status quo or to not rock a boat is to give them an award or some other form of reinforcement to increase compliance behaviors. We recall it well from childhood, as we would often do almost anything to get a gold star on an assignment, “Job well done!” Question: what gold star, award (ie, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, etc) or other keeps you from saying what you need to say - doing what you need to do to make a difference in your small circle of influence (eg, at your job, social organization, family, etc.)? #goldstar #award #differencemakers #carrot #changemakers #operantconditioning

Last week, RollDeep, our Employee Resource Group dedicated to supporting Black and African American Rollers, hosted a workshop for our managers centered on the Black Employee Experience facilitated by Netta Jenkins, CEO, Aerodei (As Seen on Forbes). Our CEO, Roli Saxena, initiated the event by sharing how our commitment to DEI influenced her decision to join NextRoll and underscored the importance of increasing workforce and leadership diversity and ensuring that all Rollers feel included. As a demonstration of our commitment to a growth mindset and continuous learning, we’re always looking for ways to improve our inclusive leadership practices at NextRoll. Increasing diversity, promoting equity, and closing gaps in experiences of inclusion and belonging for all Rollers is a core part of our culture, so leveling up our knowledge, skills, and practices is a priority. At NextRoll, these objectives are the collective responsibility of all managers. During this workshop, our leaders were reenergized toward our DEI goals and deepened their empathy by gaining a better understanding of the Black experience throughout the employee lifecycle. Just wrapped up my Brooklyn Nine-Nine binge today, and what a ride it's been! The laughs were endless, and amidst the hilarity, I learned some real leadership insights from the dynamic duo - Deputy Commissioner Raymond Holt and Captain Terry Jeffords. Holt, the epitome of calm leadership, sets the tone for a workplace where being an ace detective is the norm. Terry, a powerhouse, tough as nails with a heart of gold, rocks through the ranks from Sergeant to Lieutenant to Captain. How Terry seamlessly handles both roles blows my mind – running the precinct like a boss and being a super-family man. Holt and Terry showcase the perfect leadership combo – Holt's precision and professionalism paired with Terry's blend of toughness, mentorship, and a family-first approach. They turn the precinct into a family hangout, proving that a strong team is about more than just solving cases. This Brooklyn Nine-Nine binge was more than laughs; it was like a front-row seat to a leadership and life-juggling masterclass. I joined Greenough Communications just over a year ago with the support of an amazingly talented leadership team of Christine Williamson, Jen Heady, Jessika Parry, and Kenneth Craig – and newly added, but I can’t imagine us without her – Nicole Murphy, and a vision. Together, we will make it a reality. I’m incredibly grateful - and honored - to follow in the footsteps of Phil Greenough. Over the last 25 years, he founded and led Greenough through several incredible inflection points across the #technology, #healthcare, and #energy industries and provided us with a proven playbook to tackle the ones yet to come. From Fortune 500 companies to the many startups, he was there penning new narratives and disrupting markets. His mark on the communications field and this agency is undeniable, and I look forward to continuing his legacy.   What’s next is still unwritten, but what I do know is we will: ➡ Have fun defining the “new rules” for agencies to live by. As Eleanor Hawkins recently said, the “challenger firms” will be the ones that have senior leaders who walk side-by-side with their clients, deliver the strategy, and generate the results vs. relying on those who are just cutting their teeth in the field. This remote world can be distracting, and it can feel monotonous. But collectively, we will be keeping each other focused and present.
