What the future has in store for rail freight…or vice versa. 🔎 👀 On 8 May at the event "Rail Freight Forum" of our Swiss member association VAP – Verband der verladenden Wirtschaft , panel speakers Peter Füglistaler, Claudia Nemeth, Peter Westenberger and Ueli Maurer discussed the current situation and also debated ideas for new framework conditions for rail freight. And not just from a Swiss perspective but also with insights from neighbouring countries Austria and Germany. Single wagon load traffic, construction works, multimodality, capacity, subsidies…the challenges haven’t changed much in the past years but perhaps a new sense of urgency is being felt as political backing in Europe is becoming stronger and an innovative spirit permeates the sector. And it is this willingness to change century-old ways, to innovate, to optimize, that may be rail freight’s best chance to have a bright future ! 🔔 Panel Speakers Gilles Peterhans, Stefan Kirch, Juergen Maier (-Gyomlay), Gregor Ochsenbein and Peter Sutterlüti presented bold projects like the #DAC, #NevomoMagneticLevitation, #DataEcoSystems and #CargoSousTerrain which all aim to #transform rail freight and ultimately make rail freight’s offer better and therefore more competitive. Not everyone might be keen to embrace change but in view of the future we have to remember that "younger generations will be attracted to rail freight only if we make it modern …not if we stay with our operations from the 19th century. “
