Rock-hard sandstone used to be just plain old sand, the kind you see at the beach. If you lie down on beach sand, you will leave your imprint on it. But if you lie down on sandstone, it will leave its imprint on you. Every person who starts a business hopes to leave their mark in the sand. If that businessperson is disciplined, committed, and consistent, their mark will become sandstone and leave its mark on future employees. Did it ever occur to you that the processes and procedures, policies and warranties of a company are a direct reflection of the preferences and beliefs of the CEO? Company culture, commitment, and camaraderie – or any lack thereof – are merely a reflection of the shape of that CEO. Look closely at how a company’s employees are recruited, evaluated, motivated and compensated, and you will see the precise size and shape of that company’s CEO. Listen to how a company’s employees talk about their job, their boss, their products, and their hopes for the future, and you will hear an audible echo of the soul of the CEO. Companies don’t spring into existence on their own. They are born in the imagination of an entrepreneur when he or she lies down in the sand, then brought into reality through the magic of time, energy, and money. And if that company endures, every future customer will experience the values and beliefs and priorities of its long-ago CEO every time they interact with the company that CEO left behind. I meant every word in my opening speech! Today, I want to challenge your perceptions about a place often overlooked and underestimated: New Jersey. But I'm here to tell you that New Jersey has a secret that's been hidden in plain sight. We have an unmatched legacy of innovation. Bell Labs, the birthplace of the transistor, was founded here. Einstein, one of the greatest minds of the 20th century, called New Jersey home. Today, we have top universities like #Princeton and #Rutgers, funding initiatives like the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), and massive infrastructure projects like the Newark Liberty International Airport—a gateway to the world. But what drives this spirit of innovation? What fuels this fire? It's not just about having the right resources or the right talent. It's about having the right mindset. It's about being hungry, driven, and willing to take risks. It's about having a healthy dose of ambition, passion, and GREED. Greed, in the sense of wanting more, striving for more, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Greed that drives us to innovate, to experiment, and to take calculated risks. Since I originally posted this in 2019, it looks like Dave and his team updated the policy's language (probably because the original language is problematic at best, illegal at worst.) You tell me if it's better. "8. Review their personal budget. Can the candidate afford to live on the salary you provide? If not, sooner or later, they’ll blame you for “not paying enough” even though they accepted your offer and should know what they can and can’t live on. When people are worried about their bills, they’re distracted and can’t give their best. So serve your top candidates—before they join you—by making sure they can care for their family and meet their obligations with what you pay. 11. Do a final in-person interview and go on a spousal dinner. This may be the best advice on the list. When you're pretty certain the candidate is a good fit for your business, bring them on site to meet your team and see how things work in your company. That evening, take them to a casual restaurant to get to know them better and share your company story. If they're married, include their spouse and yours. It’s a game changer. As the spouse hears about your culture and the job role, they’re usually eager to share whether they think the position fits. One more bonus: You’ll discover if your candidate is married to crazy.
