#RingTheBell for revolutionizing river infrastructure! Over the last 15 years we’ve collaborated with US Army Corps of Engineers to help shape the future of water resources management. We’re continuing this partnership with three new river navigation projects that improve safety and reliability on waterways across the country. #BecauseItMatters 🌉 Melvin Price Locks and Dam, Illinois Leveraging traditional river marine construction equipment, including floating plant and barge-mounted cranes, McMillen is working closely with TeamSaintLouis USACE to update the main lock chamber’s mechanical systems to ensure increased efficiency and reliability for commerce and navigation on the Mississippi River. 🌊 Old River Low Sill Control Structure, Louisiana Down in Louisiana, McMillen will be dewatering the Old River Low Sill Control Structure (ORLSS). Why? So, USACE New Orleans District can conduct inspections and rehabilitate the typically submerged portions of this gated structure. The ORLSS is part of a series of critical control structures managed by USACE which serve to prevent the Mississippi River from changing course and migrating into the Atchafalaya River. ⚡ McNary Navigation Lock Upgrade, Washington/Oregon McNary Navigation Lock has been powering up since 1954 and is due for some upgrades. McMillen is working with WallaWalla USACE to upgrade the electrical power and control systems for the locks and install new mechanical operating equipment for the Bascule Bridge. From new feeders to upgraded power distribution equipment, our goal is to help extend McNary’s navigational lock’s operational life by another 50 years! #WaterResources #Environmental #Engineering #Construction

To be blunt: a huge opportunity to improve local infrastructure is going to be over in the blink of an eye. Make a difference - apply for grant funds and bring them home to your community. Join us Thursday at Burns & McDonnell - see Kerrie Greenfelder, PE, DBIA, BCEE, F.NSPE post below to learn more. We are almost three years into the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Kansas has received about $137 per capita. Missouri is at $121 per capita. We’re doing a little bit better than average compared with other states. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve your water pipes, broadband or whatever your community needs. Kansas has set up an infrastructure hub to provide support and assistance to local communities to apply for grants which Matthew Hanson, CGMS will discuss on Thursday. Read more about KC infrastructure trends in my recent roundtable interview with the Kansas City Business Journal. https://lnkd.in/gncr8XC7
Hot off the press! We’re excited to announce that Julie Lorenz, former Secretary of the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), will be kicking off our infrastructure funding session with Matthew Hanson, CGMS on April 4! With more than 25 years of experience, Julie is known for more than just her take on funding, she’s also a national leader in policy development, collaboration and implementing visioning initiatives. We’re excited to hear what they have for us about federal, state, and local project funding for water, wastewater, transportation, and more! The KSPE- Kansas Society of Professional Engineers and MSPE - Missouri Society of Professional Engineers are hosting a joint Practicing Engineers in Government (PEG) Seminar on the campus of Burns & McDonnell. 🌟 **Attention Florida Real Estate Industry Professionals** 🌟 Are the recent legal battles over wetlands-related permitting causing chaos in your construction projects? Let's delve into the implications and potential solutions: - Federal environmental officials argue that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is effectively handling permit applications, despite the permitting authority dispute. - Major business groups are advocating for a stay of the district judge’s ruling to prevent delays in the construction industry. - The complexity of transferring permitting authority from federal to state levels necessitates a meticulous review process for each application. - Rejection of the state’s request for a stay could lead to significant disruptions and delays in Florida's construction sector. As real estate professionals, how can we navigate these challenges and ensure smooth operations for our clients and projects? Let's stay informed and engaged to find the best way forward together. #FloridaRealEstate #ConstructionIndustry #PermittingChaos #LegalDisputes #EnvironmentalRegulations #StayInformed

Let us know what ports need to plan for the future! Our ports are too big (and too important) to fail. They need the best data and authoritative guidance to remain resilient in an uncertain future with changing conditions. The impacts of climate change could destabilize one of the most essential functions that governments and industry together play - bringing goods and services, fuel and medicine, and much more - to our daily lives. There has never been a greater need to accelerate port resilience, but we need your input. U.S. Ports - Adaptations for a Changing Climate To remain competitive and profitable in the face of a changing climate, U.S. Ports need to focus on several key areas, and legislators and executive agencies will be required to support this transition to an effective outcome. Infrastructure Resilience and Adaptation: Ports must invest in both green and traditional infrastructure to protect against climate-related risks like sea-level rise, hurricanes, and storm surges. This includes the implementation of green infrastructure projects, which combine natural and engineered solutions to provide protection and local amenities. Technological Advancements: The adoption of advanced technologies can enhance the efficiency and resilience of port operations. This includes automation, improved fleet management systems, and end-to-end visibility of cargo movements. Technological upgrades not only increase operational efficiency but also help in coping with increased cargo volumes and the need for rapid response to climate events. Sustainability and Emissions Reduction: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving environmental sustainability are critical. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Ports Program, for instance, funds the transition to zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure. These efforts are essential to minimize the environmental impact of port operations and comply with evolving regulations. Investment in Capacity and Efficiency Enhancements: Ports need continuous investment to expand their capacity and improve efficiency. This includes modernizing facilities to handle larger vessels and more cargo. Enhanced infrastructure, such as the Port of Miami Tunnel, helps ensure smooth traffic flow and efficient cargo handling. Public-Private Partnerships and Funding: Leveraging public-private partnerships can provide necessary funding for infrastructure projects. These partnerships can drive innovation and share the financial burden of large-scale projects needed to adapt to climate changes. Comprehensive Resiliency Planning: Few U.S. ports currently have comprehensive resiliency plans. Developing and implementing these plans is crucial for long-term sustainability. These plans should address both immediate and long-term climate risks and integrate local, state, and federal resources and strategies Clean Ports Program | US EPA: www.epa.gov America’s Air, Sea, and Land Ports Require Investment to be Globally Competitive | Wilson Center: www.wilsoncenter.org Green infrastructure can protect ports from growing environmental risks. | World Economic Forum: www.weforum.org New Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Ports: The Deep Demonstration in Maritime Hubs Project | SpringerLink: link.springer.com https://lnkd.in/gbTDi_f2
