Since the Covid pandemic trade shows and fairs have been, I think we can all agree, somewhat lacking in both attendance and inspiration. As many brands cut their Marketing budgets and moved to promote themselves and their products in more creative digital ways, many have become more selective about the fairs at which they exhibit, if they even exhibit at all. As a PR, clients often ask me of their real value, and more so than ever, their relevancy. So how do we re-energise trade fairs? What is the future? These are some of the questioned posed by Max Fraser in an interesting thought piece on Dezeen. The 72nd edition of Stockholm Design Week and Furniture fair was held earlier this month and whilst smaller than previous iterations, it really did feel more connected, and more captivating. The topics of climate change and sustainability were just some of the key themes explored by designers and studios, continuing important conversations around craftsmanship, material sourcing, education, and circular design. With Milan Design Week on the horizon, I’m excited to see how this year’s fair really engages similar conversations of innovation, evolution, and sustainability. The main theme for Milan Design Week 2024 will be, “Materia Natura” a concept that encourages the exploration of matter and nature and with the announcement that for the 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile auteur David Lynch will be a key contributor unveiling a major installation, this year’s fair looks set to be an impactful platform and ideas exchange.
