Our mission to support families experiencing homelessness and at-risk situations in San Francisco is not just a commitment but a united journey of compassion and hope. Today, I want to spotlight the invaluable role of our individual donors. Your support goes beyond financial contributions. Individual donations creates a ripple effect of change, providing stability and empowerment to those who need it most. On the grassroots level, we continue to build seeds of hope and continuation in our work serving close to 8,000 clients in the past years. Our communities are experiencing a crisis of youth and young adult homelessness. But we have evidence that progress is possible. A new report, released by the Office of Homeless Youth and A Way Home WA, shows that focused and sustained partnerships between state and federal agencies, nonprofit partners, and philanthropy have moved the needle on youth homelessness in Washington state. It's clear we have much work left to do, but this report affirms the need to deepen our commitment to this work. Supporting our youth today lays the foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future, enabling them to reach their potential and enrich our communities. https://lnkd.in/gu-b_pBk

As reported by the National Center for Homeless Education, more than 1.2 million children nationwide experienced homelessness during the 2021-2022 school year—exceeding the total number of children in 28 states. This figure includes children living in shelters, unsheltered environments such as cars or tents, or staying in overcrowded housing arrangements (doubled-up with friends or family). As troubling as this statistic is, sadly, the 1.2 million figure is likely an undercount, as it does not include younger-than-school-age children experiencing homelessness, and an estimated 300,000 school-age children are missed in the count of school-age children experiencing homelessness. In this week’s video on homelessness in the municipality, Max Chauvin, Director of Housing and Homelessness for the Halifax Regional Municipality, addresses another commonly asked question: Who are the people experiencing homelessness in our region? The reality is that the homeless community is incredibly diverse and there are a number of different reasons or circumstances that may cause someone to become unhoused. Some may have experienced a major life-changing event, or even several events, such as: loss of employment; family break up; family violence; onset of mental health issues or other debilitating illnesses; a history of abuse; and involvement in the child welfare system. Others face addiction issues that hinder their ability to take steps to help themselves. And many have been evicted at the end of a fixed-term lease, or have been renovicted, and now can’t find affordable housing. Thank you to all residents who have helped support those in need by donating food, clothing, supplies, money, and their time. Our primary mission at The Phileo House for The Unsheltered is to assist and empower those individuals and families who are transitionally homeless and are often hidden in Orlando. It's not just one face, one story, or one situation. 🏠  Transitional Homelessness: Individuals and families who experience homelessness temporarily due to a crisis, such as job loss or eviction. They need immediate assistance to get back on their feet quickly. 🏠 Hidden Homelessness: Many people live in unstable or inadequate housing, such as couch surfing or living in cars. They often go unnoticed but are just as in need of support. 🏠 Family Homelessness: Families experiencing homelessness often face difficulties finding shelter that can accommodate them together. They need resources that address the needs of both adults and children. The fight against homelessness cannot be won by organizations alone. It requires collective action and community support. Whether through volunteering your time, donating resources, or simply spreading awareness, each of us has a role to play in addressing homelessness, and together we can and will make a difference! So, the next time you see someone experiencing homelessness, remember that they are more than just a statistic. They are someone’s parent, child, or friend. On this Homeless Person's Memorial Day, let's take a moment to reflect on some eye-opening facts about homelessness both locally and nationally.   Did you know? 1. As many as 1 out of every 30 children in the US experiences homelessness. 2. The fastest-growing population of homeless individuals is older adults. Our elders, who have given so much to society, often find themselves without shelter or support. 3. In 2023 to-date, our local 211 has handled a staggering 9,675 calls related to housing and employment assistance. This is a clear indication of the pressing need for affordable housing and living wage employment in our community.   At United Way, we believe everyone deserves a safe place to call their own and should be treated with dignity and respect.   Let's remember that we can all make a difference by looking out for each other, volunteering, and advocating for policies that address homelessness.

This article has heart breaking statistics of families with children who face eviction. Many may think people who can't pay their rent have made poor financial choices - the fact is, that many single family homes in today's economy face critical choices. Should I feed my family OR pay rent late, should I pay for my child to go to the doctor or get behind on rent, Should I pay to get my car fixed so I can go to work or pay rent? At HOPE we help these families. We work hard to raise funds needed to prevent homelessness, to keep families fed, provide services to help with the issues they face at no fault of their own.
