I’m hiring! Looking for 0-4 PQE lawyers for my team. I keep my case teams lean, so that means you will in many cases have to work with or report to me directly. That is either good, or scary, depending on your perspective. What do I want? You need to be Singapore qualified. (My apologies to the talent out there who aren’t). You need to be smart, eager to go to Court, ready to speak in Court, inherently curious, willing to learn, ambitious to build a practice, and high resilience- able to take pain and suffering. Because one thing I can guarantee, this job is difficult. On occasion even brutal. We play, and aspire to play, at the highest levels. On the plus side, I can promise a few things. Exposure- you will get a wide variety of cases and disputes on your plate. Corporate disputes, construction and engineering, restructuring, trusts, investment disputes, white collar crime, IP and media, cross border work and international arbitration. Opportunity- We’re client facing. You will have to deal with clients. I want my lawyers to have speaking roles and first chair roles early. We give young lawyers the opportunities, and the budget, to do BD. Training - I’m not looking to build domain expertise quickly. I’m looking to build practice and courtroom skills, commercial awareness. Domain expertise will accrue organically. We’ll teach you soft skills - networking, communication, reading people, business development, executive presence - I take that seriously because these skills assume greater importance the more senior you get. This role isn’t for everyone. It may even be an acquired taste. But it’s a great opportunity for the right person or persons. 🌟 ACC Singapore Member Profiling 🌟 Jasmine Karimi is Secretary for ACC Singapore and APAC General Counsel for FMC Corporation. ⭕How long have you been a member of ACC and how did you originally get involved ?  I joined ACC Hong Kong (previously HKCCA) in in 2007 and helmed it as President for nearly 6 years. I started attending some of the wonderful events of the Singapore chapter shortly after I moved to Singapore from HK nearly 9 years ago. ⭕How long have you been on the ACC Singapore board of directors and why did you join?  I joined the Board in late 2019. The desire to give back, contribute to the in-house legal community and engage in the camaraderie were strong pulls. I felt I could contribute given my prior experience in HK and leverage my networks for the Singapore chapter. ⭕ Please tell us a little about your company and your role there. What does a typical day look like? I lead the Legal and Compliance teams across APAC for FMC Corporation, one of the leading companies in the agricultural sciences world. In addition to assessing and mitigating legal risks across the region, I sit as part of the APAC Leadership Team where the breadth of the work often expands outside the legal sphere. There is no typical day – it could be firefighting a compliance issue, addressing an employment law situation, partnering with the regulatory team on advocacy to negotiating deals. The best part is nurturing the team and learning and growing together. ⭕ What has been your career path?   My career path has been non-linear. I’ve worked in multiple countries (including writing 4 bar exams along the way!), across different industry sectors (not by design!). The experience has been enriching and allows me to bring a multi-dimensional and global perspective to the legal advice I render. It has also taught me to work outside my comfort zone as the only constant in my life, is change. ⭕ What advice would you give someone just starting out their in-house career? If you could do anything differently in your career, what would it be? Take the pains to really understand the business you work in, roll up your sleeves and learn. Speak and write in plain English – ditch the legalese from your emails. Learn from those around you, the young and not so young – every experience is a learning opportunity. ⭕ Anything else? Stay humble and be kind. Honest About My Professional Searching (Part 2). In Asia, my friends saddenly asked me to help work at a fintech startup for a few months while they were looking for a new employee. They didn't care about my lack of similar experience, they knew me and just trusted me. For 3 months I was head over heels immersed in IT/IP law, the fintech industry and AML legislation. It felt like jumping into a deep lake without knowing how to swim. Stepping out of your comfort zone. It was a completely different task set, applicable law and people you were working with. There was stress and insecurity, lots of stress and insecurity. But no exhaustion. Working in family law I had long ago lost my sense of novelty. However, the new experience showed me that I could swim further and explore new and interesting directions. And that's when, somewhere in a cafe on the faraway island of Koh Koode, I wrote on a napkin (yes, it sounds corny, but that's how it was) my immediate goals: - b2b; - IP/IT law; - international law; - project work without being office-based; - international interaction with colleagues. When you have a final goal in your head, everything else is organized as a matter of course. Logic appears in actions. After my return, I worked another six months in the office to prepare myself financially for the transition to a new legal career. I finished my family law cases and started working with small IT projects. Admittedly, working with software developers has its own peculiarities. However, after working with angry ex-spouses, it is hard to surprise or piss me off. My conclusion is that you shouldn't be afraid to change careers at 30. Yes, it's hard to leave a familiar practice after 7-10 years of successful career, you may spend a year or two to adapt and build new connections, but new perspectives and emotions are worth the effort.
