In 2012, during a commencement speech at Harvard University, Sheryl Sandberg shared a piece of advice that Eric Schmidt gave her when he just became CEO of Google: "If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat. Just get on." These words, spoken more than a decade ago, have since become emblematic of the boundless opportunities that arise in fast-paced, transformative industries. Twelve years later, this metaphor has become a literal reality in the space industry. On August 16th, 2024, SpaceX successfully executed the Transporter-11 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, launching 116 small satellites into orbit. This remarkable achievement once again underscores SpaceX 's unparalleled reliability in deploying multiple satellites, further advancing our reach into the cosmos. MIT, in collaboration with Castrol, has unveiled AstroAnt, a groundbreaking swarm of miniature robots designed for spacecraft diagnostics. These versatile robots are set to debut on the moon in 2025, mounted on a Lunar Outpost rover. AstroAnts are engineered to perform a wide range of inspection and diagnostic tasks on spacecraft, rovers, and landers. Chinese-built Reusable Rocket Completes 10-kilometer Vertical Return Test FriendsofNASA.org: A Chinese reusable carrier rocket completed a 10-kilometer vertical return test Sunday, June 23, 2024. This was the largest vertical return test for a Chinese reusable carrier rocket. This successful vertical takeoff, vertical landing test demonstrates continued progress towards a reusable rocket. The test flight began at 13:00 and lasted for about six minutes. The 3.8-meter-diameter rocket, powered by three variable-thrust liquid oxygen-methane engines, climbed to an altitude of about 12 kilometers before adjusting and descending. The rocket opened its landing pad supports at an altitude of 50 meters and landed slowly but stably on the pad. This rocket development is led by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, a member of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). This is the first use of the self-developed highly-variable thrust liquid oxygen-methane rocket engine in a 10-kilometer return test, laying a solid foundation for the 4-meter diameter reusable rocket to be tested in 2025. After this, the development team will carry out a 70-kilometer vertical return test. This event is the latest marker among several competing Chinese efforts to match and exceed the capabilities of SpaceX and its Falcon 9 rocket for commercial and domestic use on a large scale, combined with rapid rates of rocket production in higher volumes at a lower cost. This will further reduce the costs of payload delivery to Earth orbit and beyond for humanity. These robots are ready for the Moon 🌕 After engineers finished assembling them and putting them through a series of punishing tests at JPL, the CADRE rovers are another step closer to their mission of working together to autonomously explore the lunar surface. CADRE, which is short for "Cooperative Autonomous Distributed Robotic Exploration," is a technology demonstration meant to show that a group of robotic spacecraft can work together to accomplish tasks and record data as a team, without explicit commands from mission controllers on Earth. HEO is just beginning to unlock the vast potential of non-Earth imaging and insights with our automated technology. We have captured over 1,000 NEI images this year alone. This animated infographic shows our increase in successful NEI missions from June 2021 - June 2024. With this increase in cadence, we were able to assist customers in monitoring de-orbiting satellites like ERS-2, image the Resurs P1 satellite before and after the debris creation event, and frequently monitor various spacecraft and debris. Our frequent imaging allows us to analyse details such as the satellite's orientation, state, and behaviour, providing valuable data for spacecraft analyses. #NEI #nonearthimaging #HEOInspect #animation #space #spacetech #automation
