In an article for People Management, Partner Nicola Bennison and Principal Associate PSL David O'Hara discuss the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech Act) and whether this can provide guidance to organisations in other sectors. While the environment of higher education may be different, these forthcoming changes help provide clues as to the protections that could be transposed into the workplace to set guidance on how to balance competing views and protect the employer and the employee from harm, disruption, offence and even negative action. Maine's community colleges may be leading the nation's most ambitious push on short-term education and training. The system has tapped $100M from the Harold Alfond Foundation and federal funding to create a broad range of on-ramps to jobs in healthcare, shipbuilding, and much more. Through a new compact with 1,700 employer partners -- comprising half the state's workforce -- the system increasingly is seeing businesses help cover costs for the short-term programs, Likewise, manufacturers in Georgia have teamed up with the state's two-year colleges to create fast-track training programs -- and are covering the pricetag. The urgency is due in part to an annual turnover of 56% of the state's manufacturing workforce. The new programs are designed to quickly prepare workers for good jobs. Are these employers in Maine and Georgia on the leading edge of a trend?

Here is a Newsweek article with a different perspective on Gen Zers in the workplace-include the older generations in these issues! Everyone needs to remember the environment that pervious generations faced is not the environment of Gen Z-and vice versa-so we need to stop judging each other as "good" or "bad", but just different. Here is the article: https://lnkd.in/gjtR7ea8 If you think through the people you know under 26, you will see different levels of focus and purpose. This has always been true, but more so now, the distribution in the values of Gen Z are probably more distributed away behaviors related to loyalty and sacrifice for work. They have another hurdle- and that is a lack of trust in organizations and power; the level of skepticism is pronounced and fueled by social media. The last generation with similar thinking was during and post Vietnam War. Like then, this group is ready for a change in the values of society, a zest for life (outside of work and rules), idealistic, full of good intentions, and easily influenced. As a result-there is plenty to work with here! Realize the balance of the workforce and you, may share the same bias against Gen Z! That can be a tough pill to swallow. The good news is this can be resolved through information sharing, engagement & collaboration, and probably some changes to the way we work. Don't forget our April blended PCHRA chapter meeting on embracing Gen Z with Kristin Williams!
PCHRA is hosting Kristin Williams, Career Services Director at Kents State University Ambassador Crawford College of Business at Kent State University to help us understand the workplace preferences and expectations of GenZ. Date: April 17th Time: 11:15a to 1:00 Registration is required to obtain the webinar link. https://lnkd.in/gGpAw-dT You don't have to be a PCHRA or SHRM member to attend.

Regarding the value of trade schools: “𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙮'𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚; 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮'𝙧𝙚 𝙖 𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙮.” ~ 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙖 Stigmatization of trades has a direct impact on the future of our workforce. Undervaluing the importance of these discourages individuals from considering these career paths, limiting their potential and depriving industries of much-needed talent! And there is sooo much talent out there!!
