Why not profit or price cap the health insurers like they do in Germany, Switzerland and Japan and several other democracies to enable access for all citizens to quality affordable private insured and private FFS manufactured medical care? It’s called the Bismarck Model. Bismarck has more private insurers and hospitals competing per capita with better outcomes and costs than in America.

Hospital prices are out of control - think $3500 for an outpatient pelvic ultrasound. $700 for a simple x-ray. $15,000 for a colonoscopy. We need legislation and regulation. I know that many people are allergic to that idea - because they think that the market can solve it. But the problem is healthcare is not a free market. In addition to the lack of market forces mentioned in the article- I’d also add that (1) there is hardly any price transparency and what exists isn’t easy to use and (2) price transparency doesn’t lower costs if the health plan/employer is paying the bill- and the individual pays the same no matter where they go (3) patients can’t control where they are going for care in emergencies and in many areas (4) health systems are monopolies or oligopolies
