The biotech comeback story is starting to get picked up by mainstream news outlets like The Wall Street Journal. Rising investment in biotech won't result in new jobs overnight; but it WILL result in new jobs. Versatile product marketing strategist with a proven track record in product and program management, corporate communications, and innovation within life science, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and CDMO.
The deep freeze in biotech is beginning to thaw. About half a dozen biotechnology companies have gone public since the start of 2024, with some raising hundreds of millions of dollars. The jump-start to the new year is a welcome sign for the industry after a challenging two years fueled by layoffs, scientific hurdles and rising interest rates, investors say. Fewer than 20 companies went public in both 2022 and 2023. Biotechs have attracted more than $6 billion in follow-on financing since the start of the year through mid-February, which Jefferies analysts say is a record-setting pace—one that has already exceeded each quarterly amount recorded since the second quarter of 2021. Venture capitalists have invested $3.2 billion in biotechs this year through the middle of February, compared with about $3 billion during the same period in 2023, according to data from research firm PitchBook. “The healthy market is back,” said Jordan Saxe, head of healthcare listings at Nasdaq, “and it’s not just a fad.” #biotech #investment https://lnkd.in/gf9cgc-A

I always find that I can learn and absorb more from attending events and engaging socially with others. Today, I had the privilege of hearing a talk about building great drug companies by Mark Murcko, a pioneer in establishing Vertex's cheminformatics and computational chemistry drug discovery technology. Thanks very much to Christian Manders for consistently inviting such excellent speakers to our event #Biobreakfast. Here are some key takeaways that caught my attention: 1. People are the most crucial aspect of building a biotech company. While science plays a role (about 2%), the majority of success (98%) depends on the people involved. It's only through both success and failure that you truly understand the value of a great team. This resonates deeply with my own experience in the biotech industry. 2. There are various fields in which to build a company, with therapeutics, diagnostics, technologies for research and development, and contract R&D services being among the most popular. In addition to innovation and technology, identifying market gaps and providing services to fill them can be a savvy strategy for getting started. 3. Marketing strategies vary depending on the type of company being built. While platforms can be highly effective, their success can fluctuate. Novel modalities, such as those in the Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC) field, are currently in high demand, as evidenced by recent large mergers and acquisitions. 4. Having clinical assets adds significant value to a company. While a strong management team is crucial as a company expands, it's important to maintain a lean and focused approach. In addition to these points, the importance of building a platform has been mentioned multiple times by Mark and was also highlighted at the Wuxi Global 2024 Forum last week. Several AI-powered drug discovery platforms were showcased during the forum, such as Isomorphic Labs and @Genesis Therapeutics. Companies like Rezo Therapeutics aim to develop disease-agnostic, fully-integrated, network biology platforms. Empress Therapeutics is working on building a Chemilogics™ platform to connect the lines of code in DNA. I'm excited and grateful to be a part of the biotech field, and I eagerly anticipate witnessing breakthroughs in this dynamic industry. #Wuxi Global #Wuxi AppTec #AI platform

If you're thinking about moving from a big pharma company to a smaller early-stage biotech, you gotta check out this blog. I stumbled upon this cool piece by Emily Gransky, and as a fellow biotech recruiter, I totally agree with the points she makes and find some of the information highly valuable. When facing life's decisions, always consider the pros and cons. However, at the end of the day, it's your beliefs that get you out of bed and drive your daily grind. #biotech #newjob #blog

The ice is finally melting in the biotech world! According to The Wall Street Journal, around half a dozen biotech firms have taken the plunge into the public market since the beginning of 2024, raising hundreds of millions of dollars. 📈 This surge in activity marks a promising start to the year for an industry that weathered tough times recently, grappling with layoffs, scientific challenges, and rising interest rates. With fewer than 20 biotech IPOs in both 2022 and 2023, this uptick in public offerings hints at a potential turnaround for the sector. 🔄 Read more about this trend in biotech. More great news on the #biotech front! Check out this report from the The Wall Street Journal "Biotechs have attracted more than $6 billion in follow-on financing since the start of the year through mid-February, which Jeffries analysts say is a record-setting pace- one that has already exceeded each quarterly amount recorded since the second quarter of 2021." Considering the fact that 2021 was one of the greatest years for biotechs, historically, this is really great news! This is a confirmation of the idea that "#Innovation waits for no one." And no thing! As always, #Boston stands ready to handle this additional investment with its 58M SF of #lab space and community of brilliant #hospitals , #universities and talented #scientists. #lifesciences

The biotech industry has an extreme lack of educational content to help newcomers get introduced to the basic concepts. This makes it incredibly challenging to get talent interested in entering the industry and generate awareness about how much biotech is going to completely revolutionize the world around us. To bridge this gap, I did over 300 interviews through the biotech space to get a deep understanding into how the biotech industry works and put together this free educational beginners guide to help folks get started. This is perfect for: 1. Undergraduate students who are looking for potential career paths 2. Graduate researchers and professors looking to align their research with what industry cares about 3. Industry scientists and entrepreneurs looking to understand the current problems that need to be solved 4. VC's, B&D, and real estate professionals within life sciences who want to get a better technical understanding the biotech industry This is Part 1 of 2, which goes overviews the key industry segments, how they work, and the challenges behind them. Please share to help generate awareness to this exciting, rapidly growing industry! https://lnkd.in/ggDnczNr
