🚨 Recognising and Responding to Choking 🚨 📍 Choking is a serious emergency that can happen to anyone, anywhere. It’s crucial to know how to recognize the signs and take immediate action. Here are some key points to keep in mind: 1️⃣ Recognising Choking: Choking occurs when the airway is partially or completely blocked, preventing the person from breathing properly. Look out for these signs: - Difficulty breathing or speaking - Clutching the throat or making choking gestures - Inability to cough or make any sound - Bluish skin color (especially around the lips) 2️⃣ Acting Quickly: If you suspect someone is choking, follow these steps: - Stay calm and encourage the person to cough forcefully. - If coughing doesn’t help, deliver up to five back blows between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand. Hit hard. - If the blockage persists, perform up to five abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich manoeuvre) by standing behind the person, placing your fist just above their belly button, and grasping it with your other hand. Apply inward and upward pressure to dislodge the object. If this doesn’t work, call 999. - If the person becomes unconscious at any point, call emergency services immediately and begin CPR. 3️⃣ Prevention is Key: Prevention is always better than cure. Here are a few safety tips: - Cut food into small, manageable pieces for young children and the elderly that have difficulty swallowing. - Encourage chewing thoroughly before swallowing. - Avoid giving small, round, or hard foods to young children. Cut foods like grapes in half long ways. - Keep small objects out of reach, especially for young children. Remember, staying calm and acting swiftly can make a significant difference when someone is choking.
