Consultant in public policy and communications, tourboat captain, member of the Medina City Council.
Here are some thoughts on civic leadership. Not wanting to sink into nostalgia, but the leadership model that operated in American cities through most of the 20th century really did get results. The current economic and political climate makes it very hard to recreate that model, but as we try to drag ourselves out of the current civic chaos it is worth remembering why it worked. https://lnkd.in/gSCkpPvY

This interview with and about Gordon Brown, for whom “public service is a privilege to be earned…” has lots of great lessons about #power and #leadership. It is the comments below the article, though, that produce this absolute gem of a quote: “To be PM you have to have a special skill set: Intelligent, but not an intellectual. Ruthless, but not unethical. Pragmatic, but not without principles. Idealistic, but without illusions. Open to opposition, but decisive. Optimistic, but without wishful thinking. Visionary, but practical. Cold, but with the appearance of a warm heart. Attention to detail, but with the ability to to see the big picture. Rational, but instinctive. Emotionally intelligent, but not emotional. Above all, the experience to form correct judgement, and the judgement to analyse events.” And I would add “hard-working, but making it look easy.” Which makes it self-evident why the practice of leadership and the exercise of power are so freaking hard. #leadership #power #leadershipqualities

I am always honored when asked to participate and or speak in DC. I am very patriotic and love been a citizen of the United States and take my citizenship as a responsibility and as a privilege. I always feel unworthy and a little bit of the imposter syndrome. I just keep saying to myself, I may not be the best person but I keep showing up and thats galf the battle. I show up so my ethnic community has visibility, has a voice and has some advocacy in DC. I invite Pacific Islanders to join me in DC, we need more people involved. May 13 I will be on a panel that will address that the Biden-Harris Administration is redoubling its efforts to support Black, Latino, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian, Native American, women, and veteran small business owners. From international matchmaking and business counseling, to direct funding for communities across the United States -- there is exciting work underway to help support new and existing AA & NH/PI entrepreneurs. For instance, in Fiscal Year 2023, the U.S. Small Business Administration delivered $52.4 billion in capital, disaster relief, and bonding to small businesses and disaster-impacted communities across America, with expanded funding for minority- and women-owned businesses. Over the past year, the U.S. Department of Commerce has expanded offices and staffing in the Indo-Pacific, which has already helped U.S. AA & NH/PI companies expand sales and build commercial partnerships. Three million businesses are owned by AA & NH/PIs employing five million people with annual revenues of more than $1 trillion. This panel will explore opportunities and challenges for AA & NH/PI small businesses, despite record levels of funding, support, and services. It was moved to Walter E. Washington Convention Center because VP Kamala Harris will be attending.
