American workers -- from senior executives to retail clerks -- are reaching a breaking point as they struggle to balance the growing demand of caring for family members, while doing their jobs.
An estimated 29 million people are working, while providing care -- which itself is often the equivalent of a part-time job in terms of hours of care. Many are doing so at a great cost to their career. They may shift to part-time, turn down promotions, or leave the workforce all together.
Companies, which have long offered maternity and paternity benefits to attract and retain younger workers, are beginning to offer support for those caring for older family members. Among those benefits: adding parents to health insurance plans, two weeks of paid leave annually to care for an immediate family member, and connecting workers with care specialists.
The benefits working caregivers prize most is flexibility.
