Keynotes to myself 14June24 This is a story about how Ah Boys & Ah Girls become Young Men & Women in 180 days . One of the key highlights of a 3yr Diploma program in Ngee Ann Polytechnic is the final year internship. This to me is one of the penultimate peaks of tertiary education . For 6 months ,18 yr old students have to work and immerse themselves in the ‘real world’ - waking up consistently at 7.30am (some earlier depending on their distance to work) to catch the myriad transport connections to their interned companies , plant themselves down at their work stations and help address the challenges of the corporate world . Be it in trade,logistics, finance,operations,customer service,documentation,HR, marketing in various verticals of FMCG ,Auto ,Shipping ,SCM , Chemical , Aviation ,Electronics and many more ,they dive - all-into their appointed roles . The internship is the litmus test to see how 3 years of business theories, operations optimisation studies ,PESTLE, SAP, passing of rigorous individual assignments , viva ,exams can be fully articulated and performed in a company of unfamiliar ,raw ,non-curated working environment. Often the end results of the internships are amazing - I am a changed person Mr Tan for the better ,I now know how tough it is for my parents ,Not everything we study works in a vuca situation ,I learnt to get along and accept my weaknesses and found strength,Mr Tan work assignments got no rubrics leh ,Working life got no OAL learning ,oh how we miss the lecturers so much ( lol ) … and many more startling epiphany discoveries . Many of my students did well in their internships ,lauded letters of recommendation ,work extensions even job offers from their mentors , but there are also those who suffered and learnt that the real world really is not all a green garden of eden - Disciple , adaptability , initiative and taking responsibility are key tenets in an operating environment. Having worked in the corporate world for more than 30 years I helped to bring in key world class companies to augment our current offering - Wilmar International , Singapore Airlines ,PSA International ,Bolloré Logistics , Samudera Shipping Line Ltd ,ST Engineering and strengthen ties with others like GEODIS and Bosch whom helped us in our Integrated Group Project and 1 year internship program respectively (yes - 1 full year).The end game was to expose and transmit as much experience, and relevancy - amouring our youths to be fully job ready ahead . Behind every internship lies a bastion of support services , insurance ,overseas liaisons for that overseas attachment ,finance to secure honouriums ,academic quality audits to maintain that key learning outcomes are achieved and interns are not cheap labour. It’s an orchestra with the hopeful final overture -a successful learning journey well performed, the budding of a young seedling in full glory ,where what was once kids become young men and women of character in180 days.

#tips Some advise for youngster that looking for internship. Identify 100 company that will be fitting to your career that you want to pursue and apply internship with the person in the company, either Manager or HR by connecting with them in Linkedin or submit to their company. High chances that you will get a few internship options and always choose the one that has higher chances to get absorbed. Always go to internship with the mindset of wanting to be absorb as permanent staff because with that mindset, you have higher tendency to acquire as much information as you can for the job portfolio and understand the skills need for the job. There are chances for you to not being absorb, but don't give up because you can always take more than 1 Internship and after that take another Protege program/industrial trainee/temp. Don't be a picky on the allowance because the most important part is the exposure. Whish something that you need to prove yourself that you are equipped for the role. Hence, upon you finish your Protege/industrial trainee or temp, you will happens to have enough experience to apply for the role that you want. But still, semua bergantung pada rezeki.

Meet Ashis Dikshit! He completed his engineering degree without a placement. He tried his best to get a job, interviewed with the Railways too, but it didn't work out. In the desperation for work, he tried his hands at different types of jobs - he was an official counsellor with a karaoke application, a sales and business development associate for edtech brands, and a customer support executive among other roles, but nothing gave him a job satisfaction or felt like a career he wanted to pursue. He rethought his career path and realised that he should give Human Resource a try. The only problem was he didn't know anything about HR. So, he decided to join us for our Placement Guarantee Courses in Human Resource Management (link in comments) and build the right skills. Here's what he has to say: "I didn't have any knowledge of the HR field but I wanted to gain learn. In the Placement Guarantee Course, I got 1:1 live sessions and I got some extra courses like Advanced Excel and Business Communication too which were important for HRM. In the course, I learnt HRM specific skills, recruitment, onboarding, etc. I wasn't sure if I'd get a placement but the team promised ki placement lagega hi lagega. I gave 2-3 internships and got a work-from-home internship at jobmygoal. I got to interact with a lot of people and got a knowledge about different profiles and roles.
