🌬️ Just had an exhilarating experience conducting my first Physical Verification of Stocks at a cold warehouse where the temperature dipped to a bone-chilling -20 degrees Celsius! ❄️ Interacting with the warehouse manager and supervisor was insightful, and navigating through the different chambers of the warehouse was Challenging as well. 💼 Managing inventory in such extreme conditions was undeniably challenging, especially with the strict limit of fifteen minutes in the cold warehouse at a time. However, it was a test of resilience and adaptability that I'm proud to have tackled head-on. 💰 With over 6 crores worth of inventory spanning a wide range of materials, this task was really hard to take over. But with effective communication and collaboration with the team, we successfully completed the verification process. 📝 Key takeaway: Facing challenges head-on strengthens not only our skills but also our character. Are you wondering how to know if you are ready to be a director of operations? Well, a great indicator is if you already are one. You are already playing the role and doing the work in someone else’s business, just without the title. You’re the second in charge, but you’re really the second in charge. Not just the one doing everything, but the strategic partnership that comes with the DOO role. You can be a DOO who still implements and carries some of those OBM responsibilities, but with that layer of high-level strategic partnership added on top. It is that kind of high-level strategic thinking that comes with the DOO role that moves a business forward. So maybe the question for you shouldn’t be “am I ready to be a Director of Ops?” maybe the real question is “Am I one already?”

Have you ever gotten tasked with a project that had nothing to do with your normal day-to-day? It can be incredibly frustrating and seemingly pointless, especially when you already have a to-do list a mile long. I'd encourage you embrace it and learn as much as you can from it, because you never know when that information will be useful! Back in 2018 I got tasked with helping our procurement team benchmark stretch films that are purchased for our stores/DCs because I had the most experience with plastics. It was a big undertaking and was outside of my normal scope of work (which was already overloading me), but I went along with it and learned a ton about stretch film. Fast forward 5 years - I'm walking through the distribution center with my Manager in my new role as a DC engineer, and I realize that they're using a stretch film that was WAY more aggressive than they needed. I did some digging and calculated the impact of it in that building (plus the 6 others that are using the wrong film), and it came out to be $65k in potential savings. $65,000. Just from changing over to a different stretch film. Just because I had led this one project years ago that made me a resident SME. Is that an earthshattering savings? No. But for something so simple, it still helps the bottom line. Maybe it's just dumb luck (I had no intention of getting into the DCs at that point in my life) but it's my belief that every step, every project, and every experience is leading you to something greater later in life. My new adventure starts at BRP as a Supplier Quality Specialist.

Quality is the name of the game. Inventory, as well as production, has to be quality driven. It's funny when I think about quality of work I immediately think about coaching. Whether it's inventory control, producing parts or learning to run a route you do not want to rush. Quality>quantity. Learn to perfect your craft with quality reps!

Last month, I spent a week's worth of days in our warehouse, helping redesign our inventory process. That's not in my job description, but it was what the business needed from me. Getting our inventory process right is what most needed to get done to create successful outcomes for our team in the future. It's easy for us to fall into the trap of saying, "That's someone else's job." But if that "someone else's job" is where I can have the biggest impact? That's where I'm going to be. Even if it means putting other stuff that is in my job description on the back burner to prioritize this project. So if you sent me an email but didn't hear back, now you know why. I was out in the warehouse. ;-) Do you spend a lot of time outside your job description? 

It's crazy how much operational details and systems I'm focused on week to week. But it makes sense when we farm, manufacture and self-distribute, and have 10 employees. Operations is personally my not strength or passion, so it takes patience when things are messy and need improvement, but it's pretty cool when a new procedure clicks into place and you can look back on 6 months and see the improvements. Currently working on trying to get our weekly inventory systems in place and integrating that into our cooking schedule and also our sales forecasting. Typing that last sentence overwhelmed me, but people say 1 thing at a time. As I work on 3 at a time :) - 1, then 2, then 3 ugh, we got this!

I had the pleasure of hearing and meeting Walker Lumber & Supply, Inc. at the LBM Journal Strategies conference last month, as they received the LBM Dealer of the Year 2023 award, and couldn't believe their beliefs and community support actions.
