Last year France banned domestic short-haul flights where train alternatives exist, in a bid to cut carbon emissions. This among others affected flights between Paris-Bordeaux (560km by car) and Paris-Lyon (460km by car). https://lnkd.in/daB2VAVp This year the Danish government wants to support short-haul flights in Denmark by introducing a zero-VAT on the airports. Among the affected airports and flights are Karup-CPH (320km by car), Sønderborg-CPH (315 km by car) and Aarhus-CPH (347km). And interesting enough this initiative comes at a time where flight frequency among the Danes are “back to normal” after the Covid lockdown. Why do we keep supporting high carbon emission activities? Why not invest in better trains also in Denmark so we can cut transport time and carbon emissions? https://lnkd.in/dT7bYHsC #carbonemissions #travelindustry #transport

Due to an increasing demand for rail travel between Switzerland and Italy (mainly on Gotthard line), Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is preparing for an expansion of its services with an order for five additional Giruno: an eleven car EMU multiple-unit with a top speed of 250km/h from Stadler.

Italy is well known for its expansive railway network, but there is one journey that stands out as being particularly unique. Direct trains run multiple times a day connecting key cities on the Italian mainland and stations on the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily. But what is unique about this journey? Well, as part of the journey, the train is shunted onto a ferry at Villa San Giovanni station, sets sail across the Strait of Messina, and rolls off onto the island into the port of Messina before continuing its journey along the northern coast to Palermo and the south east coast to Siracusa. This is now the last remaining train in Europe to make a journey on a ferry, after the train from Hamburg to Copenhagen started to run via the overland route in 2019. Source: Rail away

A 3 meter wide #bicycle lane (9.8 feet) - each way! - sounds gloriously spacious. It's sized to accommodate an increase in the number of cyclists. As you can see in this video, it also allows for side by side riding. Too many of Seattle's bike lanes are door zone #sharrows or gutter bike lanes - with no protection, and no futureproofing and capacity for increased usage, or allowing parents to ride side by side with their kiddos. Seattle has had 6 people die on our roads in just the last week. We can no longer afford to be complacent to the growing crisis of road safety. We need brave and visionary #leadership - like Anne Hidalgo, like Valérie Plante, like Matúš Vallo - who will prioritize #climateaction, #safestreets, and #publichealth. All topics foundational to my forthcoming book. Unfortunately, no one seems willing to step up here. Why is there a dearth of leadership in the US on these issues? #citiesforpeople #stadtplanung #bikes #urbanplanning #mobility #verkehrswende #sustainablemobility
Fortune favours the brave, and Bratislava Mayor Matúš Vallo deserves immense credit for this reallocation of road space on Vajanské nábreží. A pair of car lanes were converted into a pair of three metre wide cycle lanes; forming a key missing piece in the city’s burgeoning network.

Passenger traffic in the Port of Turku exceeded its goal in 2023, as around 2.6 million passengers travelled through the Port. Viking Line’s passenger volume on the Turku route grew and Tallink Silja Oy ’s passenger figures were also fairly good towards the end of the year. As a result, the passenger numbers decreased by just eight per cent on the previous year, despite one vessels having been removed from the capacity. The realised passenger volume means that the Port of Turku maintained its position as the leading port in the traffic between Finland and Sweden and as the second biggest passenger harbour in the country. Portugal continues to bick global trends. At a time when many governments are seeking increased revenue, Portugal’s leadership has voted to eliminate many of the tolls on its highways. Not all tolls are going but the removal of tolls on many of the excellent highways will mean that many more motorists will be able to enjoy multi lane faster travel. #tollroads #portugal #liveinportugal #welcometoportugal #movetoportugal #investinportugal #retiringabroad
