Last year France banned domestic short-haul flights where train alternatives exist, in a bid to cut carbon emissions. This among others affected flights between Paris-Bordeaux (560km by car) and Paris-Lyon (460km by car). https://lnkd.in/daB2VAVp This year the Danish government wants to support short-haul flights in Denmark by introducing a zero-VAT on the airports. Among the affected airports and flights are Karup-CPH (320km by car), Sønderborg-CPH (315 km by car) and Aarhus-CPH (347km). And interesting enough this initiative comes at a time where flight frequency among the Danes are “back to normal” after the Covid lockdown. Why do we keep supporting high carbon emission activities? Passenger traffic in the Port of Turku exceeded its goal in 2023, as around 2.6 million passengers travelled through the Port. Viking Line’s passenger volume on the Turku route grew and Tallink Silja Oy ’s passenger figures were also fairly good towards the end of the year. As a result, the passenger numbers decreased by just eight per cent on the previous year, despite one vessels having been removed from the capacity. The realised passenger volume means that the Port of Turku maintained its position as the leading port in the traffic between Finland and Sweden and as the second biggest passenger harbour in the country. A new intermodal rail freight service connecting the #Cervignano Intermodal Terminal, near #Trieste, and the #Pančevo Dry Port Terminal, near #Belgrade, will start operations on 11 May. The service can be seen as the evolution of a block train service which was running between the terminal in #Italy and the #Indija terminal in #Serbia. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

Good to see the paper points to the 1:28 train vs. plane relation of GHG emissions. Let’s all stick to this EU average and to GHG emissions (not just CO2 emissions) because these are the categories the aviation industry hates to be mentioned.
A broad alliance of different German stakeholders in rail has agreed for the first time on a joint ticketing position in a manifesto for the upcoming EU elections. #Rail should become a top priority for the next EU Commission - and independent ticket distributors as well as rail incumbents such as Deutsche Bahn could sign the paper : Booking train tickets for journeys in Europe must become as easy for consumers as booking plane tickets. Appropriate services for the simple purchase of tickets should be expanded and promoted. To this end, data access and commissions should be fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (#FRAND principles) in order to create a level playing field in online rail ticket sales. GERMANY: Update – Trains cancelled Trains across Germany have been brought to a near standstill today (January 10) due to strikes by train drivers, according to Euronews Travel. About 20% of long-distance Deutsche Bahn trains are running. Many regional and commuter trains are not operating. Munich's S-Bahn is expected to run trains at least every hour. However, Munich Airport will only be accessible on the S1 line.

The sixth Hanza Media conference on road safety was about green transition: The strengthening of public transport and the use of bicycles, as well as the acceleration of the introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles, are the key levers of the green transition in domestic road transport, it was pointed out at yesterday's sixth Hanza Media Conference dedicated to road safety under the title "Green transition of the transport system of Croatia and EU". The technical director of Bina-Istra Group, Mr Christian Santaleza, also participated in the discussion, who pointed out that, due to the high level of safety, since 1981, not a single serious traffic accident with fatalities has been recorded in the Učka tunnel. We are installing an energy-efficient ventilation system and LED lighting in the existing tunnel tube in order to increase energy efficiency, but also safety. Mr Santaleza discovered that during the tourist season, more and more electric vehicles are seen on the Istrian Y. Taking into account the current situation and the growing number of electric vehicles on Croatian and European roads, Bina-Istra Group has decided to launch a tender whose purpose is to collect offers and provide domestic and foreign users of electric vehicles with the highest quality supporting infrastructure on the Istrian Y in the form of super-fast electric charging stations. #motorway #construction #hanzamedia #conference
